Heya!!

I need some help deciding where to apply. My GPA as an undergrad was pretty low, so I decided to move to Cambridge and go through the Harvard Extension School?s Health Careers Program. I took 6 four unit UNDERGRADUATE bio courses. Here are my stats:

Undergrad: UC Berkeley
Major: Molecular and Cell Biology
Degree: BA in MCB awarded May 2002

Undergraduate Total GPA by Semester
Freshmen (BCMP: 2.67, AO: 3.54, Total: 3.18)
Fall 1998: 2.86
Spring 1999: 3.47
Sophomore (BCMP: 2.41, AO: 3.33, Total: 2.70)
Fall 1999: 2.44
Spring 2000: 2.65
Junior (BCMP: 3.37, AO: 3.70, Total: 3.40)
Fall 2000: 3.13
Spring 2001: 3.79
Senior (BCMP: 3.55, AO: 3.65, Total: 3.57)
Fall 2001: 3.43
Spring 2002: 3.81

Harvard Extension School (2002-2003)
Immunology I ? A
Immunology II ? A-
Biochemistry II ? A
Microbiology ? B+
Intro to Epidemiology ? A-
Topics in HIV & AIDS ? A
Total GPA : 3.8

Overall Undergrad GPA (including Harvard and a few CC classes) according to AMCAS:
AO: 3.52
BCMP: 3.23
Total: 3.31

MCAT:
VR: 10 PS: 10 BS: 10 WR: R

Research Experience
- Summer Intership in an environmental toxicology Lab at UC Davis
- Student Researcher in a microbiology lab at UC Berkeley for 8 months (acknowledgements given in a published paper ? big woop) -> completed a semester of honors research
- Summer Intership (full-time volunteer work) in a burn research lab at Shriners Children?s Hospital

Other Experiences
I also have 7-8 months experience volunteering 6 hours a week in the ED of Mass General Hospital transporting patients around and helping the radiology staff
I?ve been involved in a cultural and religious club, but I have completely avoided pre-med and medical societies.

I have a 2 rec letters written by Harvard Ext. teachers, a rec from a Berkeley professor co-written by my TA, a rec from the chief of staff of the Shriners Hospital I researched at and I?m getting a committee composite letter from Harvard too.

Ok, obviously my GPA is still pretty low. I'm hoping that the fairly solid grades at Harvard and decent upward trend in my undergrad GPA since my horrible sophomore year (all laziness and immaturity that year) will help my case. Here is a list of schools I plan to apply to:

UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Jefferson, East Virginia Medical School, Finch University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, Loma Linda University, Tulane University, Tufts University, NYMC, Wayne State University, SUNY ? Syracuse, Drexel University, Mercer University, University of Illinois, USC, Temple

Obviously I'm a Cali resident. I need a few more mid to low range schools to add to this list and I need the existing list to be critiqued. Can you guys give me an honest assessment of my chances at this point? Also, can you suggest some decent DO schools to add to that list where I might have a chance? Is there a big difference between applying today versus next week (June 9-11)? Thanks for reading this and sorry for the long post!!!

I'd say you're not going to get in because you made all of this stuff up.

Boston University, SLU, maybe VCU? I don't if they are in state heavy or what

You should do a search for a thread from this past cycle... it was called something like "GPA less than 3.4 and interviews?" to get an idea of how people did. I recall that alot of people did indeed come out okay in the end. Plus UC Berkeley gpa will carry a bit more "oomph" I would speculate

BTW, throw on some dream schools just for the he ll of it. Ya never know what happens in this process. You have enough so called lower tiers to compensate.

I dont know if it makes a difference if you submit this week or next week...I know some people who submitted yesterday that had some kind of credit card problem, so looks like the kinks are still being worked out. I think b/c you have your MCAT scores already in hand that will help you out.

Good luck

edit--also I think you should take off Mercer...I thought that was heavy GA in state. Add on Wake Forest, maybe Loyola too

What exactly did I make up? I guarantee that it's all true. Why would I want an evaluation of a fake record?

You've not been here long enough to know that they will slam you for posting questions like these.

You don't need anyone's advice on this. It looks like you have it worked out already.

If we had the answers, we'd all be in med school already and there wouldn't be any waitlist or reapply threads!

Good luck

I'd like to at least get a couple more schools I can apply to that will be likely to take someone with my stats. Thanks.

Try applying first, then if you get in, then you know your stats were good enough and your question is answered. 😎

DUH!!!! honestly! why bother replying with a post like this?! this guy is seeking advice, not a statement of the obvious!

ANYWAYS-- you should also look into some of the lesser publicized NY area schools like albany medical college, albert einstein, etc. definitely keep finch and drexel too. drexel has a pretty large 1st year class and likes ca res.

also, in case you didn't know, med schools don't get your amcas app until july 1st--i assume amcas uses the month in btwn to verify transcript vs. coursework you entered (BTW--this is such a waste of time! someone needs to invent a sys where your instit can submit your transcript to an online prog that will automatically convert your grades to the amcas gpa scale!) SO... if your transcripts are in, submit now, if not, i don't think it will really mean anything until amcas gets them.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the advice, Wuzup. I think my transcripts were just sent out, so they should get to AAMC by next week. Do I have to wait till they receive them or till they process them before I can submit the AMCAS? Or can I submit now and let the processing occur afterwards?

before applying, be sure to check in state/out of state admission stats for the schools you apply to. i am certain that mercer takes very few if any out of state applicants, and i believe that evms has recently been showing a strong in state preference.

Goodness WuzUpDoc, lighten up...my post wasn't meant to be serious, hence the reason why I ended it with a smiley face.

SonofSpam, although it fluctuates some, your GPA shows improvement overall as you went on in college, and I think this will be taken into consideration by adcoms when evaluating your application. Also, Berkeley has a reputation for not being the easiest school around (to say the least!) and I think the academic reputation of your university will be taken into consideration as well. As a New Orleans resident and knowing more than a few successful applicants to Tulane (both in state and out of state), I'd say your chances for an interview at Tulane are good, despite your slow start grade-wise. I can't speak much for the other schools though, but I can wish you the best of luck!

Hi fellow Bear,

The general rule of thumb is to apply to some dream schools (you never know), some schools in the 2nd tier, and some unranked schools. Of course whatever comprise these categories will vary for each person.

Check MSAR for schools that don't take out of state residents. e.g. Mercer, SUNY, Wayne State (?), and take them off your list!

Unless there is no way in hell you'd be happy at these schools, I suggest adding MCW, OSU (they like Cal bears I hear), Rush in addition to the other suggestions. Beware Rush's secondary is helllla long (sorry Cali slang). As for DO schools the only one I know is Touro up in Vallejo.

don't worry. you'll do just fine. a couple weeks makes little difference. btw you didn't post your mcat score.... that could make a difference.

best of luck 🙂

Thanks, sunflower. I did post my MCATs, they were just kinda hard to find. It's right below where I put my overall GPA.

Son of Spam,

take Mercer off your list!!! They simply do not accept out of state applicants. You could be a 4.0 ivy/42 candidate and would get rejected pre-interview at mercer.

You should make sure the other schools on your list accept a decent # of out of state applicants. For example, does wayne state accept many out of state candidates?

Also I'd add VCU to the list.
