Negative Aspects of Nova

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
To my dear Melbourne!

Here are my negatives:

1) girls are WAY too hot and sexy down in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, I will not be able to concentrate!

2) The facility is WAY too new, I prefer older, rusty ones!!

3) If this guy from SDN name Melbourne, goes, I do not wish to be his classmate! I think that he'll sit in the front of the class and ask pointless questions all the time! I will not be able to handle that for FOUR years!!

4) There's a free parking garage right next to the HPD campus, I hate free shi#, I rather pay for a parking spot!

5) Did I mention hot chicks? Man, I CAN'T stand hot chicks!!

6) Palm trees, I can't stand palm trees either!

7) Nude beaches, I AM so against "hot" chicks walking around showing off their implants!! I can't stand that!

Need I list more?! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> Oh wait, I wasn't suppose to reply to this thread, was I?

Baccurso,

What can I say, I AM completely a "tool"!! As long as you're cooler, then we're fine!

negative aspects of NOVA? for me it would be that Andy will be there! J/K! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Andy, that's not the point. You have voiced your view of Nova on countless occasions, and in mine (but I'm probably not alone) too much. We get it. Congrats on finding a school you absolutely love, that's what we all want. But someone posted asking for advice, and they specifically requested that you not respond because as I just said, you've made your feelings clear. It's not only rude, but egotistical to do this. Maybe someone actually doesn't care about your opinion; so much so to the point that they ask you not to give it. And yet you still do. Is it really that important to drive your point home? We get it already. Maybe you could have actually been helpful here and critiqued Nova because it has to have some faults, and since you seem to know the school so well, who else is better. But no, again you act like a self-centered, immature person who seems to find so much time to pull themselves away from the mirror to post uselessly on SDN.

Baccurso,

Yes, I understand your point, but you know what? Melbourne and I are pretty close friends! When he said "Andy, your response is not desired", he was joking around cause he knows that Nova is where I will be! So I joked back! So to answer you posts, THANKS but no THANKS!!

Again, just remember as long as you don't come across immature and self-centered on this SDN thing, then good!! I'm just having a GREAT time with my colleagues and you know what? I don't think that you're invited in this fun little party of ours!! Peace! 😡 Oh and one more thing, I rather POST uselessly than not post! 😎 If you want to start playing this "name calling" game, I'm in, just let me know when!

hopefully this can continue in our chat tonight! 🙄 hope everyone's there!

Melbourne,

NOTE: no offense at all is directed toward Andy.

Seriously, i dont intend to offend anyone interested or going to Nova, but as a student in Florida, Nova does not have a good reputation amongst both my peers and practicing dentists. I have spoken with dentists AND read on this forum about dentists that were not at all impressed with the clinical skills demonstrated by Nova grads. I have no firm proof, but I have heard on several occasions that Nova struggles to remain accredited. However, to the schools credit, it IS accredited. Also, though the facilities are brand spankin new, they are shared with the other allied health professions. Nova is a very expensive school as well. i am by no means an expert regarding the school. but pre-dental students in florida rarely consider nova other than as a school to fall back upon or to stay close to home. and take into account that the university of florida is the only other school in the state. i'm certain that someone can prove me wrong. but if i'm going to spend that much money, i will go to a private school in the northeast or pay out-of-state tuition at some school. are people just paying for a new school near a beach?

Ehop24,

Your points are very legitimate! No offense taken!

Nova has had 1 graduating class...1, i repeat 1. How can you make a judgement based on one class? Have your peers actually sat down with each one of them and said hey let me see your clinical skills? I mean get real...it is not the school it is the person.

As far as tuition price tag at NOVA it is average compared to all of the other PRIVATE schools in the country. Before you bad mouth a school make sure that the one your going to is PERFECT. There is no PERFECT school out there every school has flaws. I heard that UF has a very old and run down clinic and preclinic. Does that make it a bad school??

The students who will in time become doctors will make the name for the school. It is a new school keep that in mind.

When I was at my interview there I spoke to the taxi drivers, hotel employees, people in downtown Ft. Lauderdale..everyone said nice things about the school. Even the doctors that I have worked with here in Michigan have said excellent things about the program.

Hey, If you think having brand new EVERYTHING, having a very large patient pool, and being in a great atmosphere deserves to be talked about in a negative way than I respect your opinion but keep in mind you would not like someone bad mouthing your school without any substance! 😡

One more thing I forgot to add....When I was at my interview at NOVA one of the students there was already accepted at UF and was planning on attending NOVA if accepted.

Do not always think just because SOMEONE said something that it will turn out to be true. I never listen to people If I did I would never of made it into dental school. Research everything on your own. 😀

yo UofM01,

have you heard from mich yet? i think we both are looking at similar schools. just wondering...

In suport of UM's statement regarding Nova, the school had nearly 1800 applicants last year from throughout the country. The 2001 entering classes stats were:

Overall GPA: 3.3
Science GPA: 3.2
DAT: 18

These stats are very respectable and the stats are even higher than several NE private schools. Additionally, it is very easy to find faults in any school. However, it is the individual student who determines his/her success in dental school, on the boards, and their career path in Dentistry. Remember Nova students take the same boards as Harvard students and I guarentee you that our CLASS WILL SMOKE THE BOARDS because of Nova's training, the quality of students who Nova accepts, and the nature of the student class to help on another succeed!

Scottsdale, I have yet to hear from Michigan. I had my interview there almost 3 weeks ago and still no answer.

rjr, You are absoultely right with that mindset. Keep in mind also that Florida and California are known to have the most diffucult tests to practice in those respective states.

Nova is a great school in my eyes and im always right!!! just joking lol

•you are a tool•••••I agree. Yah-whatever, you are such a dork. I can't believe a dental school actually accepted you. Any respect I may have had for NOVA is now completely gone. I'm glad Florida is a long way from Pennsylvania - I would hate to be your classmate, and I am sure I am not alone in thinking this.

P.S. Good luck at NOVA! I'm sure all those "hot chicks" you mentioned will be impressed with your SDN stories.

I say give Yah-E a break! He has provided many with a lot of good information about dental schools and the application process. Obviously, he was kidding about his earlier post. Good luck at NOVA Yah-E!

Eschou,

<img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> I welcome your thoughts and by how you speak, you should be glad that I'm not your classmate cause I would make your 4 years of dental school a living hell!

All I've got to say is, I GUARANTEE that I WILL smoke your ass on NBDEs and I will still get hot lady friends even with my "SDN stories"! You know, I refuse to continue this condescending exchanges online, you're simply lucky that we're separated by thousands of miles because I would love for you to say all this **** in front of my face! I know that I've made some dorky enenmies on this SDN thing, but as a poll once showed, I've made more friends than "haters"! 😛

Brian,

Don't worry about what Eschou is saying, he can say what ever he wants! It's just too bad that he can't say that in front of me! Protected by computers!! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

😡 😀 😀
ITS MY OPINION THAT THE KEY TO EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS BALANCE IN ALL ASPECTS.....Its obvious that Andy has reached that point and feels comfortable with Nova and its great to see people with passion towards things, its good to spice things up a bit, flavor or " gusto" and why not, the bottom line is you got accepted and Andy got accepted as well, you're going to upenn, whoopy doo !! that's great 4 U, I really hope you straighten out all ur interpersonal issues by the time u graduate cuz the real world is tough, its not easy, and like I said on another post, 4 or 5 years from now all you're going to be doing is a service, no different than what a mechanic or any other blue collar type of job, the diff. training and years but soooooooooooo what, at the end of the day, ur servicing someone, besides training to be a dentist, you may also need some training on how to deal with people in a more political way, calling people names and what not, c'mon man...butch up a bit, act like a man or a real woman, whichever applies.........be a little more humanistic !!!!!!

Way to go Andy.... 😀 😀

Thanks y'all for your sincere responses. I asked for honest reactions to Nova and I'm glad most of you were willing to offer your opinions. Ehop, thanks for bringing to light the negative aspects for which I asked. RJR and UofM, I'm glad you two had good things to say about Nova. Baccurso, go easy on Yah-E; he was an abused child. I think DMD1272's previous message was brilliantly expressed. Thank you.

to dmd1272, I am afraid that I do not think you "brilliantly expressed yourself" in asking someone to "butch up". So much for your "political way".

EAK27

some people only understand that way, he asked, he got it, that's all.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

on a side note: does it really matter what school you attend ????....perhaps, but if your desire to become a dentist is truly for altruistic reasons then it shouldn't matter right.....someone from Nova should be able to perform with the same level of professionalism as someone from UPENN, right ? 🙂

As long as the school is accredited is does not matter. FYI-all U.S. Dental Schools are accredited. The reality is when you get out and start to practice, 99% of patients don't care where you graduated from as long as you make them feel comfortable and are competent in delivering care. You can have someone who scored a 25 on DAT with a 4.0 GPA from UPEN (nothing personal) but has the common sense and people skills of an ant. You can also have someone with a solid DAT and GPA from Nova, who also has good common sense, and chairside manner. IT IS ALL UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL! WE ALL MADE IT INTO DENTAL SCHOOL AT THIS POINT, SO LETS USE THIS FORUM TO HELP EACH OTHER OUT, NOT TO PUT OTHERS DOWN TO MAKE OURSELVES FEEL BETTER/MORE SECURE.

I 2nd that RJR...... 😀

Andy,

I have no doubt that you will "smoke my ass" on Boards. Personally, I really don't care, since my life does not revolve around dentistry. In the end, it is just another job and there is much more to life than dental school and the competition that comes with it. However, if you feel differently, I will respect your priorities, as we each have our own lives to lead. As for "hiding beind computers", let me simply say that is most certainly not the issue. My personal opinions of you remain the same, however I will refrain from slandering you or anyone else and simply keep them to myself. Best of luck to you in all your future endeavours.

I have heard, on this board, and other places, that Nova is in jeopardy of losing their accrediation. I know this is NOT true, but where did this rumor start? Or what is the basis of it?

However, fail to see why you bring up what school I am attending. From your posts, you make it sound as though I believe going to a certain school will allow you to be a better dentist. I have NEVER implied that in any of my previous posts, which is why I only mention what school I am attending whenever people directly ask. Maybe we both have interpersonal issues to work out.

I am in total agreement with the rest of you - it absolutely does NOT matter which dental school you attend, as far as becoming a competent dentist goes.

Anyway, thanks again dmd1272 for opening my eyes a bit.

Eschou01

I apologize for proselytizing but your tone just didn't sound right, good luck to you as well though and being a dentist its not just another job, sorry to hear say that, was Ansel Adams just another photographer, was Georgia O'Keefe just another painter, I think not. I think that as pre-dents and future dentist it's up to us, the next generation, to keep that mantle way, way up, its a science but I think more importantly its an art and a great one it is, and its the way these two branches are intertwined that makes dentistry such a fascinating and great job......I don't know how many of you share this view but that's just a little food for thought.........I really think that as pre-dents and future dentist to be, we can make a difference......but then again, I know those things take time.......
🙂

Georgia O'Keefe was a no-talent hack!!

🙂 Keep it light there, fellas! The only way dental schools can be compared (if at all) is by board scores and basketball teams. That said, you now understand why (in both cases) I chose UConn over Penn!!

Its all fun and games until someone loses an eye...then its just fun and games with one eye!
