I've always heard rumors about people playing schools off of each other and negotiating for more aid. Does this really happen? Does anyone have a true story to tell me? How does one go about this?

I'm in at two private schools with equal tuition. I thought the cost of living in both cities was similar but for some reason, one of the budgets is 4000 more than the other. On top of that, the school with the lower budget gave me 8000 in grant for year 1. As luck would have it, I'd much rather go to the more expensive school. Would there be any hope in asking school A if they could match or atleast approach the aid of school B?

I figure I don't really have anything to lose, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with these things.

I have a sorta similar situation, school A being private and school B being public....it's kinda late in the game to play them off each other but it can't hurt to try....

for me, school A told me that if i got a different estimated family contribution from another need-based fin aid to fax it to them and they might be able to help me out...school A has actually been very helpful in terms of trying to get me the best aid, but it is probably bc they have good funding...maybe the school that is giving you less grant money just doesn't have the funds available???

in any case, it can never hurt to try!

i'll let you know if anything actually changes for me...

good luck
