Hi everyone,
Currently a second year peds resident and interested in Neonatology fellowship. I am trying to get more up to date information on the application topic. Most of the threads are older and thus I am not sure whether they have changed or not.

little info on me: decent step scores, research in gen peds as well as currently working on a NICU project, decent performance so far in residency. I think I wil be able to get good recs from NICU docs as well as PD.

My questions are:
1. Is there a resource that more formally tells you whether a particular fellowship program is level III/IV NICU because not all of them have it on their website? Does it matter in training?
2. Besides FREIDA, any other resources about particular programs?
3. How many programs do people apply to?

I am sorry, this process seems a lot different than residency application where the med school held your hands through it all. If there exists a similar RECENT thread discussing this, I would be happy to be redirected.

1+2: I'm not familiar with any great central reading source. I recommend reading through numerous NICU websites. Don't just read the fellowship page, look at the rest of the department site as well. Unfortunately, some department/fellowship websites are really crummy. Talk to current 3rd year residents applying now about their impressions of various programs. Get in touch with former residents from your program who matched into NICU and get their take. Ask neonatology attendings and fellows at your institution about their experience during fellowship training and about the NICU at former institutions where they worked.
3: There's no singular answer here. This will vary dramatically. Oftentimes people have strong location ties, typically applying to a limited set of programs based on their location needs/interests. The answer to this is really up to you. The application process is generally not very competitive. So don't feel like you need to rank a ton of back up programs.

I am applying to neonatology now. I applied to 8, and I think that was plenty.

As for level iii/IV, I didn't know there were programs that had only level iii nicu without any time in a level IV. A lot of places will have you rotate through multiple nicus - a level III that you do a lot of deliveries and standard prematurity things and a level IV where you'd see the more complex cases that need surgical or other subspecialty support.

As for it mattering, I personally would not want to go to a program without a level IV nicu but that's my own personal preference. I think it's important to see as many of the complex cases as you can during training even if your plan is to work in smaller level II/III NICUs for the rest of your life.
