Some lame-oid school gunner walking out of class: "If you have a life while you're going to school, that's bad. You're not suppose to have a life while you're in school."

I immediately pictured her as a depressed 40-year-old sitting on the edge of her bed with a gun in her mouth 20 years from now, wondering where the hell did her youth go and why life passed her by.

There are many different roads towards a destination. If she believes this road is best for her, then there is no need to judge. She will learn eventually if there is need for change or not.
Hmm that sounds pretty Daoist 😎.

I protest the equation of nerdiness to being pathetic

Maybe she should join SDN. We'll show her that she doesn't have to wait 'til 40 to be totally one-dimensional.

the op should go after her, sounds like some serious sexual repression awaiting to be relieved

I didn't know any premeds had time for a life between the 500 hours of shadowing, 300 hours in the ER, managing 10 clubs for leadership, hospital internships and last but not least 20+ hours a week of research

 Funny you say that because the main reason why I pictured her the way I did was because she appears to be a really frustrated person. She sounds like she's on edge all the time (like a stick is up her ass). She's constantly letting out these huge sighs at mundane things and becomes very impatient. The whole not having a life thing doesn't seem to be working for her because she seems unhappy. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe she really is happy. :hardy:

I like your sense of humor

Umm... got to say, that's actually pretty manageable (and the values are totally exaggerated, lol, but if they weren't...).
500 hrs/12 mos=~10 hrs/wk
300 hrs/12 mos=~6 hrs/wk
20 hrs/wk research
leading 1 club/night (10 hrs/wk)

Over 4 years, that would be very much manageable along w/ a life on the weekends and some weeknights.

Heh. I never said that! I'm a total nerd. But there comes a point where the two might meet. For example, a 30-year-old lvl 1000 WoW player with no job who lives with his parents.

"If you have a life while you're going to school, that's bad. You're not suppose to have a life while you're in school."

You're almost certain to hear this statement again - especially if you're going to medical school. I've met many people thus far (classmates, professors, etc) who believe that you are squandering your potential if you don't devote as much energy as possible to your studies. While I see the logic in that argument, I would also argue that an unhappy person is far less likely to meet their potential than one living a well-rounded, happy life.

Either way, this opinion is out there. Moreover, some people seem become genuinely agitated and distressed by letting their focus lag, even if it's only for the purpose of having a life for a few hours each night (or week, in some cases). This girl might be one of those people, in which case it's probably best to just leave her to her own devices.

well it's manageable until all the clubs decide to meet on the same night, your full-time EMT job I didn't mention needs you for a call, and you have two exams coming up on Friday :luck:

no the poorly executed joke is I can't think of any of the premeds I knew in person as really "having a life" because it seemed to get in the way of other things, like studying, and having 100 ECs and if they did have a life they were already in medicine so i guess this girl is normal to me, and i dont see her blowing her brains out at 40, at least for that reason

but that could just be my school of neurotic individuals

46 hrs/wk of EC's in addition to school/studying in addition to a healthy social life?

False.

you cant do that?
i do all that, plus i travel to africa every weekend to care for starving children...plus i broke a pi bond...using only my mind.

its okay to be a nerd, but if youre a nerd AND you still perform poorly in classes...then you need to evaluate your life.

you can only get to lv 80, thats the max. oh wait....i c wut u ded thar

nerdiest thing I've ever heard...this was GA Tech, I was in the bathroom washing my hands and my hair was in a pony tail. I'm a black woman so my hair doesn't fall down quite like a white girl's hair does. Anyway my hair was sticking up a little and this girl looks over at me and says "whoa, I just love our hair...it's so...gravity defying. It was the nerdiest, weirdest compliment I've ever gotten. But, i'm a nerd too, so i understood what she meant 🙂

Black people have antigravity hair?

Just ask her out already and stop bringing your baggage here.

👍

Not impressed. Now if it were a Sigma Bond, you would be 😎

LOL gravity defying hair. Erm, I'm not black but I feel kind of offended anyway! I would have been like "well, yes...they DO use our hair to propel maglev trains."

Have you ever thought she might have been joking and it went over your head? Maybe you're the one who needs to take life less seriously and get out more! 😛

False.

I never said healthy....lol. j/k, but yeah, you can pull that off w/ a healthy social life if it's all your doing. Ask any of the full-time PB students floating around. Many of us are holding down 40 hr/wk jobs to pay the bills while also taking full loads of pre-med classes and keeping the volunteering up. Some may end up giving up their social lives but I know I didn't. It just forces me to be more strategic with my time....

👍 word. PB student here - it was fun to spend 30 min after class with some friends and get a pint at the local pub. learned excellent time management skills and was able to fit social activites in here and there. granted it wasn't the thu-fri-sat-sun party fest like some undergrads do. it makes me wonder what i was doing with my time as a undergrad when i barely got everything done on time yet had tons more free time in restrospect (wasn't partying either).
