Hello everyone, second year here. I know it's entirely too early to be worrying about this, but I'm soooo afraid of Step I. :scared: Most of my fear stems from the fact that I've forgotten some of the material that we've learned just from the beginning of the year. I of course know that it's possible, but there's just SO much info to know, how will I remember it all? And it seems as if some of my classmates remember more than I do! Is it normal to feel this way? I was going to start studying for Step during Christmas break. Is this wise? Sorry for all the moping, just feeling really discouraged right now.

Yes. Breathe. Only start studying over Christmas break if it's going to give you peace of mind. If it's not, then just focus on doing well in your school work and start reviewing FA/Pathoma/Goljan in January. Some people like doing Pathoma/Goljan throughout MS2, which is a pretty good idea if you can put in the time.

Don't annotate FA with your school's class notes. Just don't.

I had a friend who studied like crazy, yet made himself physically ill from worrying about Step 1. We had drug abuse rumors from people who could not handle the stress.

So yes, it is normal to worry/freak out about step 1.

well it sounds like it's common. but is it actually normal?

Second year is rough because all you do is study and the fear of Step 1 is always looming. Make some sort of schedule, but not too rigid, study hard when you can but TAKE BREAKS when you can or really feel like you need to. It's good that you're recognizing your stress. Be proactive about your mental health and do things you enjoy in between the studying. You will be fine but don't get behind.

Remember that no one needs a 260, ever. Do the best you can.

Think of people from the class above who you know are stupider than you and somehow survived it 🙂

Yes, totally normal to freak out. No, you don't need to know everything. Make sure you remember the big picture though so you have some place to stick the pieces of info when you review later.

It is normal. I faced a lot of insecurity concerning that exam; I really did. You will review info and will be surprised what you recall, and how much easier it is to "re-memorize" concepts you knew decently but just haven't used in a while. Like CassieBagley said, try to funnel that insecurity into a positive thought (which is definitely hard) or at least let that insecurity drive you to study harder/carry notecards to review when you're just hanging out.
Work hard. Whoever you are, I hope you reach the goals you set for yourself.

Study over Christmas break only if you truly hate yourself that much

It's 100% normal to be nervous about the most important test you will ever take in your life.

And to the poster that said "no one ever needs a 260," well, that is simply not true. A 260+ can make your life MUCH easier. Of course you won't have a life while studying for that 260.

Worried about Step 1? Rather unusual. I'd get your urine metanephrines checked.

And if you don't know what that is testing for, you're really ****ed.

These kind of symptoms are pretty normal with those who are planning to clear step I. But at the same time make yourself confident before appearing for this, else there are chances that you may forget to reply on the questions with correct answers. Study whenever you get time & keep revising the same from time to time.

Normal to be nervous, not normal to be so nervous you can't focus on learning. Things will work out. Remember you'll have plenty of time after classes end to review everything multiple times.
