Hello,

I’m a current ophthalmology intern looking for some advice on networking while in residency. During orientation my program gave us a list of alumni and where they’re practicing now. To my surprise, there were a few recent alumni in private practice in my hometown which is a relatively small city and geographically distant from where my program is. My wife and I would love to end up back there when I’m done with training and I know it’s early, but I’ve been considering reaching out to some of the physicians on that list - not necessarily to express interest in or inquire about a job, but more to find out generally what it’s like to practice in my hometown, what kinds of opportunities are available, what the subspecialty needs are, etc. I know it’s early, but I’m curious to get peoples’ thoughts on this as well as hear what worked for other people when it came to landing that dream job.

Thanks!

Just send them an email and see who responds. Most of the time I have found that they are happy to take you out for coffee and just chat about ophthalmology/get to know you. I was able to pick up some good tips about why they chose the subspecialty and practice model they did (academic vs PP). If they are not interested they will just not respond.
