One of the POIs for which I will be applying to work with in grad school this coming Fall is giving a talk at the University where I am now an RA.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to prepare and, when approaching her after her talk, what I should say / follow up with afterwards? Any advice would be welcome!

I am thinking of reading as much as I can about her research and thinking of questions I can ask her, but I wasn't sure what else I could do and how to make a good impression when talking to her. Should I mention that I want to apply to the grad school where she teaches at? Talk to her after the presentation? Follow up with an email afterwards?

Could you ask one of your current professors to introduce you? I would try to talk to her somehow, even if you have to do it on your own- perhaps you can email her before she comes? Either way, I would definitely email her afterward to maintain contact.

I would like to piggyback.. in about 3 weeks I'll be at a national conference that everyone in my field will attend. Basically, my biggest goal is to network like crazy for post-doc. Any tips or suggestions would be welcomed as I am hoping to get to talk to dozens of different POI. I know a few people and it's good to see them again, but I really want to make sure to network effectively and appear intelligent.
