We are given opportunities to go to conventions and meet ODs that are well established in the field. Though I want to take advantage of these opportunities, I'm not quite sure how to "market" myself. I am, after all, just a student.

Marketing and networking during these conferences will give us a chance to get "in" and to have possible job prospects for the future. My personality type is strong, but I am not as outspoken as other students. When I meet an OD at a conference, what should I do? This may be common sense to many, but I have been a student for my entire life!

Did you steal my thoughts and post them on SDN?! I feel the exact same way.

I'm thinking to approach those situations like trying to pick-up a girl, haha. You don't just walk up to a girl and ask her out: a)if she goes for it she is probably psycho and desperate b) she'll be really creeped out and run away. Come up with some common ground, find someone that practices in the area you want, ask their opinion about certain aspects of the profession, ask if you can come see their practice to help get a better understanding of how you should run things.

Just don't want to come off us a pretentious weiner when you are really just trying to show yourself as a good employee.
