I matched to a transitional year but unfortunately I haven't got an advanced position in Neurology. As an IMG, Do you guys think it's going to be easier/harder when I apply the next match for 2013 positions?

Congratz for Transitional Year! Make sure you do at least 8 months of internal medicine. Check on American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry website to be sure of all the requirements.

You should scramble for all vacant PGY-2 spots and also people who are matched into advanced positions but not first year. If they do not get the spot, the programs have to take their name of their list. Contact the program director and have program director or someone else from the place you matched call the program that has vacant spot.

You hopefully get a spot this year.

Best of luck!!!

Thank you very much. So should I look for PGY-2 outside the match? Do you know how I can find that? I scrambled PGY-2 positions but no luck.

Wish I could trade with you somehow! I matched PGY 2 but no TY! TY is wayyyyyy harder to get I'm surprised you didn't match into PGY2. Its good though because you won't lose a year.

Also the above poster is right
You need to do 6 months of medicine + 2 months of IM/ER/PEDS and then the rest of the 4 months u can do whatever

I'm not sure if TY is harder since the number of prelim positions outweighs advanced/terminal residency spots. You should look for a PGY-1 position outside the match after SOAP is over. I'm pretty sure they will hook you up since you are matched to Neurology already!

Your choice of neurology residency will be less as most programs will already be filled. On the other hand, as mentioned, there will be openings, and only a few people like you who have an eligible first year but not yet an advanced year, so the competition is less as well. I would say overall your chances are good for getting an advanced year, though by no means certain. Good luck in your search!

Question for residents in neurology or, even better, program director in neurology:

I just matched to an ob/gyn program. I have an extensive background in neuroscience...before med school, worked at a lab doing research for treating brainstem tumors in children, then worked doing neuropsychiatric testing for a study involving AIDS and dementia, then worked at MD Anderson in their neuro-oncology department doing social science research with glioblastoma patients...oh and also I have a master's in neuroscience from Columbia. I entered med school kind of in denial that I liked neuro so much, thinking I would probably just see what happened during my 3rd year rotations. To make the story shorter, I did ob/gyn for my last rotation of 3rd year and loved it (we don't do a neuro rotation in 3rd year). I got on the ob/gyn train and never looked back...until these last few weeks when I've been in my neuro rotation. AND I LOVE THE NEURO ROTATION! (Not surprisingly I guess)

So my question is...what can I do with one year of ob/gyn? Would that have any chance of counting for a prelim for neurology? Also, is there any way (do you think) of me getting a prelim position and not even doing an entire year of ob/gyn? And also...is the best shot I have to maybe try to get into the neurology program at the same place I matched for ob/gyn? (Of course, that is if I decide to make this huge change). Would it be possible to try for another position in a different program but in the same area??

I know that's a LOT of questions - SO SORRY. Feel free to PM me, anybody out there who may be able to help.

Thanks so much

Pretty sure there is no way your OB/GYN intern year will qualify you for an advanced neuro position. Also, the chance of you getting into a prelim/TY year now is extremely low, as there are many people already who have matched into advanced programs but don't have prelim years lined up. Those people have their advanced programs on their side, you have nothing.

Your OB/GYN intern year will, however, serve as an excellent foundation in OB/GYN. You loved your third year rotation enough to want to go into it last year, and aside from having a new crush on neurology it doesn't appear that anything has changed that. My advice would be to do your OB/GYN intern year and see if you still love it. If you don't, then you'll have to apply for prelim and advanced neuro programs to transfer.

Hey, I'd rather be a race car driver, but I'm stuck as a neurointensivist. Doesn't mean I don't like neurology.
