I plan on reading HY neuro, but should I also read the short chapters in BRS phys and path regarding neuro? I read in a past thread that the last half of BRS phys is too much detail needed for step 1...

I didn't care for the BRS Phys neuro chapter --- much of that material is covered (in less detail) in First Aid. The BRS Path neuro chapter is worth reading.

The objectives at the beginning of HY Neuro are great, be sure to check those out.

HY neuro is beyond the level of detail i've seen anywhere... more than kaplan neuro, first aid, etc...

do people usually try to memorize/understand the whole thing?

its so freakin detailed, i cant remember any of it.

You can get quite a bit of both.

For Neuroanatomy, HY had the answer for every question I saw.

I just skimmed through HY neuro and thought it was way too detailed for the boards (although I'm sure you could find every answer in there). IMO FA does a great job on the neuro material it covers, make sure you have a good general idea about pathways (I liked neuroanatomy MRS for that) and know the stuff in FA cold, perhaps supplementing with a little from HY but by no means is it necessary to memorize HY. I'd agree that BRS phys is a little overkill for neuro as well.
