Is it very difficult for an IMG to get into a neurology residency program ?
can an IMG get into a neuro program by having high scores in USMLE and with some research experience ? How much important is us clinical experience in getting into a neuro program ?

hi, sure you can get neurology. A lot of programs have IMGs. Its all about how much interest you demonstrate in the field. Know for sure why you are interested in neurology...and be specific.

Seems like there are a lot of IMG in Neuro. Shouldn't have a problem... Work on your English. I actually saw "speaks and understands English language" as a requirement listed on one programs website. I guess nothing is obvious any longer!😎

But according to NRMP 2008 results, only 34 positions were offered to non-US IMGs. Then it seems a bit difficult. What's the main criteria for selection into neuro programme ?

Those 34 were non-US IMGs that matched into PGY-1 positions. Another 75 matched into PGY-2 positions.

Not to mention the number of IMGs who prematched into either type of positions. IMGs are independent applicants who are allowed to accept spots outside the match. Just because that info isn't officially reported by the NRMP doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Now, it would be nice if one had quotable numbers, but the point of the replies to your post is, I guess: in some fields there's more hope for IMGs of appropriate background than it may look like.

On edit: I seem to have posted at the same time with bluntdissector.

You can get an idea of the number of residents that match outside the match at a given program by comparing the number of slots offered at the start of the interview season/mentioned on their website vs. the program quota they report on the nrmp website.

For example this year one of the top academic programs was offering 9 slots, but ended up only listing a quota of 6 through nrmp. Given their current residents, I strongly suspect that they were filling serveral spots per year with highly qualified international students.

In other words, if you are a great IMG applicant you might get some good offers from programs because they want to "lock in" as many good residents as they can outside of the match.

my name is ahmad
i am an american IMG
and i am planing to pursue neurology in the US

i have some questions

what is the USMLE score in step 1&2 needed for neurology?
dose me being an american (though an IMG) help in my acceptance?
do i have to do an observer-ship in the US?
is doing research really needed to get accepted?
what are the neurology IMG friendly programs?
