So how easy is it to operate a general neurology practice in a more rural area? I am thinking a population of <100,000. Would there be large enough of a patient population to support a full time clinic and be able to make a decent living?

Coming from North Dakota, I can tell you that there are plenty of rural opportunities available. Actually, available is an understatement. They are dying for neurologists in towns like Minot, Grand Forks, and Bismarck. Some smaller towns in Minnesota are in the same boat (Bemidji is one). The money is solid, if not outstanding, but keep in mind the downfalls of living in a very rural and very cold state.

jleken, I'm curious if you know what the pay range is for the areas you mentioned?

You should be able to make at least 200-250K. That goes a long way in the middle of North Dakota. However, you would, of course, also be working like a dog and constantly pressured to see more and more patients since you'd be the only neurologist for 400 miles . . .

Caveat emptor. Keep in mind that there are reasons that certain places can't attract doctors . . .
