Hi all

I have done a lot of searches, but as I have a rather specific enquiry, I could not find an answer mentioned elsewhere.

I need a good neurophysiology/neuroscience textbook. I realize these terms are not entirely interchangeable, but with regards to the textbook I am looking for the difference might not be that important. I have Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases as a neuroanatomy text, Neurology in Clinical Practice as a reference/comprehensive textbook and Primer of EEG to help out with EEG's! Massachusetts Handbook of Neurology for my lab coat pocket. But I lack a good neurophysiology textbook, and my course was pretty weak on neurophysiology. I love Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases, and a similar textbook dealing with neurophysiology would be ideal. I like it since it is of value as an undergrad in both the pre-clinical and clinical phases and possibly even in PG-Y1. I spent some time looking at the following books, which seem to have 'basic science' and 'clinical' value:

From Neuron to Brain: A Cellular and Molecular Approach to the Function of the Nervous System
- - - The problem is that the latest edition was published in 2002, could this be a bit dated? - - -

Clinical Neurophysiology by Jasper and Devon
- - - Quite expensive, nice and new. Perhaps not enough neurophysiology other than that measured by EEG/EMG/evoked/etc - - -

Neuroscience by Purves
- - - Looks good, but some people think it might be too basic? - -

Principles of Neural Science by Kandel etc
- - - Perhaps a bit dated now? - - -

I would appreciate any feedback!

Thanks

I know you posted this thread looking for answers but I have a question for you myslef, I hope you don't mind:
I did Martin's Neuroanatomy: Text and Atlas 2 years ago and I want to refresh my memory; What do you think about Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases ? It is the First and only edition and it was released 2002 . . . I want to get it but I think its a bit dated, right? I would hate to buy it the find out that a newer edition came out a month later!

Like someone said on Amazon: Neuroanatomy doesn't change that much! 🙂 The 'clinical relevance' shifts somewhat more rapidly in the sense that me might understand the neuroanatomical and neuropathological correlations of more diseases, and hence they will feature in neuroanatomy textbooks, but the actual structure is constant. Sort of interesting - neuroanatomy is constant and hence textbooks that are 6/7 years old can still kick ass, whilst neuroscience changes so quickly one can hardly complete the textbook before it is dated!

As for waiting for the next edition - I am still waiting for the new 'Requisites: Neuroradiology' book (should come out March next year I hear) but, then again, it could take longer...Sometimes you just have to make the call - would you gain more from having the book a few months or a year longer, or from having the latest edition? I love the textbook, and I would really recommend it to anyone interested in neurology or anyone wanting to improve their neuroanatomy/localization skills...eventually we'll all upgrade to the Brazis I suppose, but this is a good text to take one to residency! IMO at least...I'm nearing the end of my medical degree, so I'm not THE best person to ask, but as I said I own various neurology texts and I am certainly heading towards a neurology residency in the states - so I'm not the worst person either...

I just placed an order on Amazon . . . I should get it within 3 weeks and Requisites: Neuroradiology seems interesting, It seems I'll order it too! Thanks!

Blumenfeld's Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases. Indispensable.
