I received a letter from the University of Detroit Mercy stating that that are starting a three-year Program for Graduates of Foreign Dental Schools.

From the letter:

"The application deadline to the May 2008 entering class is approaching quickly (December 1, 2007). The School of Dentistry will offer up to twelve (12) qualified candidates with competitive credentials an opportunity to enroll in this program in May 2008! Please reply promptly, should you require an application."

The contact information is:

Office of Admissions, BOX 38
UDM School of Dentistry
8200 West Outer Drive
Detroit, MI 48219-0900

Telephone (313) 494-6650 or (313) 494-6611
E-mail: [email protected]

For e-mail's they request that you place in the subject line "Program for Graduates of Foreign Dental Schools."

I do not have any more information, so if you are interested call the school.

When the school tells you the requirements for application (which scores are needed, whether green card is needed, whether there is a theoretical or practical exam), you can post it in this thread.

Good luck to anyone applying!! 😍

Does anyone know what are their requierements for part 1? I didn't see anything in their website.

Thanx

I got a letter, which doesnt say anything about number of seats, it just says its a space based program, and they will know about the number of seats by the end of october.when the current D2 students move to D3. They didnt have any seats for the last few years.
Requirements include
NBDE part 1 miminum 85 with minimum 80 on each section, part 2 preferred
Toefl- IBT100 with atleast 25 in each section.
Proof of Permanent residency/citizenship
2 letters of references from professionals residing in the US

do we have to contact their office to send us an application or is there a link from where we can download it.

Hi , I have got the sme letter. I am in MI and i have been to this school to get the information. This is a good program. It is only for the graan card holders. Minimum toefl is 100 and minimum speaknig is 25. Ndbe part 1 minimum is 85 but higher score is always a priority than other things in the application. Part 2 is optional but gives weightage to the application. It's a totaly private school. It is in detroit area. Thay have just finished building up the new clinic and are going to move in the new clinic in the end of december. That's why they got more space in the school and reserverd more seats for both regular and international dental students. MI means freezing cold in winter. I wish you good luck for you.

You can call the given phone number and leave a message including your name , adress and phone number with the request of getting application. They dont have that much information online. They will send you a full package with information and application in a few days if you didn't get any yet.

They have opened 12 seats for the program this year. Upto last year they did not have that much space available. This time because of the new clinic they have reserverd seats for international students.

I have been trying to apply to this program since 2 years. But becuse of not having enough space i couldn't get any chance.

Thanx for the info Himal and dentalbug....
I have been in Michigan, its cold but Minnesota is even colder.
All the best to all

are u sure they want 25 in speaking in toefl .and in total 100 ...

on their web site they just wrote 7-9 lines and no contact info for this particular program ..

yes, i got a letter, that says 25 in each section or else they need detroit english lan prof with a score of 80 or more.

is this different from the program they already had , or was that a two year and this new one is a three year ?

Their program has always been a 3-year program. But it used to be space-based, they would offer 1 or 2 positions. But apparently from what others are saying, it seems that they have expanded the program to accept more international dentists.

Thanks gottago, I think I'll look into it.

I visited UDM yesterday. They sid they don't have that much information on website. I already posted that the program was used ot be space based. This year 12 seats because of the new clinic and more clinical space. I asked them and they said the program is different in the sence that every year it will provide atleast 6 seats compared to the space based before that. It was 3 years program before and it is the same three year program right now. I hope it helps.

They also told me that they are going to move the clinic from dec14 to jan 14th. The clinic will be closed. They are going to send all the information regarding te application status and other information that is going to be updated in mail to all the applicants.Upto that time there will be no phone convertation .but you can keep your process continue. They will keep you in touch with them by mail. They will start callnig the studnets for an interview mid January.

hi , you seem to have visited the campus and got lot of info from them about the program. Could you pls share any info you know about the Detroit test of english language proficiency?

I heard that Det mrcy is an unstable private program. Lots of faculty members have left and there accreditation is doubtful. They didn’t accept any candidates for 3 yrs due to unpredictable future. They are accepting more people this time as they need money. They raised tuition fee from 35000$ to 68000$.
Correct me if I am wrong.

may i get the source of information pls .....

A dentist who was recently offered a faculty position there is known to me.

this is a good point to discuss for all schools, Accreditation is very importnant. The three schools that i saw on ada web site with Accreditation with reporting requirements were UDM, UNLV and UMN. I dont know what kind of problems they found, but if a school loses accreditation that means ADA may not license the studetns, if i am not mistaken. UDM does seem scary than?

Here is the definition from ADA website:
Approval (with reporting requirements): An accreditation classification granted to an educational program indicating that specific deficiencies or weaknesses exist in one or more areas of the program. Evidence of compliance with the cited standards must be demonstrated within 18 months if the program is between one and two years in length or two years if the program is at least two years in length. If the deficiencies are not corrected within the specified time period, accreditation will be withdrawn, unless the Commission extends the period for achieving compliance for good cause

this is what the ADA says about UDM:
Accreditation Status: Approval with Reporting Requirements
Last Accreditation Visit: 2007
Next Accreditation Visit: 2014 i interprete that till 2014 it is officially accrediated....correct me if im worng...

one more school that falls in this category is University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, ..i cant believe this !!!!!! baltimore is considered on of the top notch dental schools .....

If you read the definition, the school has 18 months from 2007 visit to correct the citations, if NOT done then the ADA mya withdraw the accreditation, that is how I interpret it.
hope this helps

I wouldn't worry about the accreditation issue at all as long as the program is accredited when you start. An interesting point is let's say you get accepted into an accredited dental program and in the middle of your education the program loses its accreditation (very unlikely ), you would still be considered a graduate of an accredited program according to the ADA rules. so RELAX!
