There was a lot of debate as to when the new Apple laptops were going to come out, and they were announced today. They will ship in February and look pretty awesome. Here's the link:

And, that took about four seconds to want one.

I think I'll stick to a Thinkpad Tablet X41. Or Fujitsu Lifebook tablet.

Be careful, you're going to piss off a graphic artist somewhere. And you know those artsy types...they're unstable. :scared:

Alright, how about, macs look pretty.

but they still suck. 😀

does anyone know if a lighter 12'' is in the works, or is it just the 15''?

Nice. Too bad I'm going for straight portability when I get a laptop.

Fujitsu Lifebook P1500D then. 2.2 to 3 pounds, 7 hour battery, 60 gig HD, nice processor, touchscreen tablet. But it has less functionality (no optical drive, only one DIMM slot, smaller keyboard, 9" screen).

too bad i'm drawn by the aesthetics of the macs. they're like really attractive ditzy girls; pretty on the outside, not quite as useful on the inside.

the problem with this one is that the tablet functionality is worse than conventional electromagnetic stylus tablets... or else i'd be all over this one!

Me want now *arghhhhhh*

and, even more important, no matter what you stick into them (or where you stick it), it'll immediately start playing with it.

haha well said. and i'd like to revise my previous post by saying not quite as practical rather than useful.

I'm pretty sure what you meant to say is "awww, skeet skeet skeet."
Oh yeah, of course I'm still talking about the computers....

too bad the new macbook pro looks exactly the same as the old powerbooks. and the new name is stupid.

but i want one anyway. i <3 my powerbook.

i wonder how much faster they really are?

i want one too, but i want a 12 inch. 😕

So they're finally making Macs for Intel processors? Apple was making builds of their OS X platform for Intel processors for years in case Power PC went in the tank. I've never liked Apple's notebooks--they're made with too much flimsy plastic and the keyboard is terribly unresponsive. Plus, I've had enough problems with my iPod to trust their quality control.

Anyway, Thinkpads are the best designed notebooks out there. Their keyboards alone are worth it (better than any I've ever used, desktop or notebook). Plus, IBM (or Lenovo which bought out IBM's Thinkpad business) makes Thinkpads with Intel Centrino Dual Core processors, which is basically the same cpu in the Intel-Macs, so I guess you could soon have the best of both worlds--OS X Tiger running on a Thinkpad!

sweet! now the price for the powerbook will go down *crosses fingers* :luck:

I firmly disagree about the ibook and powerbooks being flimsy. I have a 12 inch ibook and it's more than durable. Compare it to your cheapo dell laptops or even the thinkpads (which I would not go for now that Lenovo [some chinese company] has taken over the ibm laptops, which means that quality control is going to go down the pooper).

I've been using pcs for the last 8 years, and I've found that OS X has everything that windows has but more. Sturdy frame, very reliable, looks nice, all software that I need for pc is on apple (microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc). 95 percent of users don't need the tools that a pc provides and just need a simple (a way apple does elegantly) means of checking e-mail, browsing the internet, listening to music (iTunes is far better than winamp, windows media player, etc), movies.

Yeah I'm a litlte biased, but not too long ago i was completely anti-mac. Apple's made a quality product here and I give it 2 thumbs up

badlydrawnvik and jbrice, i'm going to have to use those jokes next time a mac v pc discussion rolls around. that's great stuff.

Oh yeah, I have a 12 inch ibook that I bought back in August '05 (5 months or so) and I bought the computer for ~ $1300.00 USD, what is the most reliable way to sell this (to buy the intel one) and what is a good price to sell it at?

I would say check Ebay to see what the current selling price is.

I want one of the new MacBook Pros too. But I just got an email from the med school where I expect to be next year and they said that they're purchasing a laptop for every student. Sucks. I'm sure it's going to be some junky Dell. can i choose med school on the basis of what kind of computer i'll get?

Optical audio out. I'll be all over this one 🙂

Which schools buy their med students laptops?

colorado sent out an email saying that all med students in next year's entering class would be required to buy or lease a laptop and pda with a service package. no way they're going with a mac package.

*sigh* and here i am with a little dinky G4 power book. *hangs head down in shame*

anyone want to buy mine for 2k so i can buy a new laptop? 😀

If you could dual-boot in OS X and Windows... man, how sweet would that be?

this site lists some of the problems with the new macbook. i especially am a little disappointed with the loss of the s-video out, because i tend to use that for watching shows i've missed and downloaded. also, apparently the batter life is more around 3 hours whereas the powerbooks were around 5.

I think you can get a little dongle to convert the video-out port on the new MacBook to S-video. If you need a modem, you'll have to get Apple's USB modem, as there isn't one built-in.

I usually find Paul Thurrott happily camped out in Bill Gate's right pants pocket, but he did do a nice table comparing the MacBook to the current PowerBook here .
