Dear Swtiepie711,

The Admissions Committee for Brown Medical School has completed its preliminary review of applications to the MD Class of 2011. It is with regret that I must inform you that your application was not selected for interview consideration and, thus, we are unable to offer you a place in the entering class. Your formal notification letter, sent via US post, provides additional information regarding this decision. Best wishes for success in your medical career.

Sincerely,
Kathleen A. Baer
Director of Admissions and Financial Aid

This message is new (as of today or yesterday) - I was wondering when they'd get around to rejecting me 🙂

EDIT: Maybe this isn't new, as I know some pp have gotten wind of pre-interview rejections from online - I guess the line "completed its preliminary review of applications to the MD Class of 2011" stood out to me

yeah i got that too, i was talking with a rhode island student and from her information she told me that brown takes all of its own students first, and if there arent enough qualified from there school, then it will go out of its way, and seeing as the class is extremely small, i wouldnt be down about it 🙂 at least i can throw away some of these pamphlets from schools i have laying around

Yea, I'm not too sad about it - it's actually a nice feeling to narrow the list of possibilities 🙂 That and dumping the extra paper weight!

I saw the same message on my status page for Brown yesterday. I called them today and for once someone answered the phone (it did not go to the answering service). I asked for some insight into why I wasn't even invited for an interview. I told them that I applied late (I was complete on 12/27, four days before their secondary deadline) and that I wasn't sure if I wasn't invited because of the quality of my application, because of the tardiness of my application, or because of a stronger than usual applicant pool.

They replied that they do not have the resources to counsel candidates and explain why they were not accepted or what they could do to improve. So I'm basically left in the dark. I feel that I am a strong candidate; I have received interviews at schools generally considered to be more selective and more respected.

Does anyone else here find themselves in a similar situation with respect to Brown? I find myself wondering why. I understand that they are small. What type of student are they looking for?

Do you mean that for standard admission? Because they formally have a BS/MD program that a lot of the students come from (which might be what your friend meant), but leave a third of the class (~30 spots) open to standard admission....and I didn't really sense a Brown-preference for standard route (and when I interviewed, there wasn't anyone from Brown undergrad).

Brown started giving out acceptances the first week of January. Since that's the week after you submitted your secondary, and Brown only has 30-35 spots for standard admission, my guess is that the timing of your application did have something to do with it. Good luck with the rest of your schools!
