so apparently it's trendy now to consume placentas after birth because the hormones present in it ease symptoms of post partum depression, relieve bleeding, and the organ is full of nutrients.

i'm actually pretty disgusted but kind of intrigued at the same time, i read that most mammals perform placentophagy.

soo...what do you think...new niche in pharmacy? bringing in your placenta to your local pharmacy and having the pharmacist dehydrate it and encapsulate it for you?? i'm only kind of kidding. lol

That is so gross. I'm bummed I didn't think to ask to see mine but I was distracted with the surgery and the whole having-a-kid-now thing

I've heard of eating it as some kind of religious celebration. I imagine it would be loaded with nutrition.

Hmm... I still remember the time when Tom Cruise wanted the placenta after his daughter was born.I think I remember reading somewhere that they actually sell dried human placentas in some select Chinese medicine shops. I think I have figured out the mechanism by which it cures depression.
1) You eat it
2) People think you are insane
3) Depression doesn't seem that bad anymore

Haha...apparently it has a lot of estrogen/oxytocin in it so the hormones contribute to balancing out the hormone levels in the body...I think it makes sense, it is true that most mammals consume them so why shouldn't we? better than taking drugs

People can do things that are even more weird and gross than this. For example, I once had to do a paper on cannibalism. There was some tribe somewhere (can't remember if it was in Africa or the Amazon region) where children are not really considered "living souls" until they can walk. The cultural mores were such that a young woman should not have a child until a certain age because the young woman wasn't strong enough and having the baby drain her body of resources before she was "strong enough" would mean that she would have trouble bearing all of her children in the future.

The solution for this dilemma? They would take the child and kill it. Then they would turn it into a stew and have the mother eat it over the course two days. Their concept was that the baby was still part of the mother and thus there was nothing wrong with the mother putting that part of herself back where it belonged.

Really gross....and demented if you ask me. It's not just limited to backwards tribal cultures either. They just had a story on Yahoo News about how Koreans were caught buying capsules with packed with dead babies in China for some type of medicinal effect. Here's the article for those who want to read it: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sidesho...containing-powdered-flesh-dead-190306280.html

I always thought of South Korea as one of the more "modern" parts of Asia too.

When I was pregnant with my 1st daughter 17 years ago, I read an article about placentophagy in a breast-feeding magazine. What to do about the placenta came up apparently because of the growing number of home births. And it's the only meat that's vegan-friendly because no animal was exploited or killed.

Placenta recipes.
