I got an email saying ABEM is developing a new way of doing Concert (which, yes, I still have to take and pass, to be able to take my sub-specialty boards). Instead of one big, 400 question test every 10 years at a testing center, doing a single 40 question test every year, but online and with the chance to retake immediately if failed. It would not end all the MOC busywork.

It seems better on the surface, but like anything, the devil is in the details. Thoughts?

I'd prefer to do it once every ten years....then you don't have to do it at all your last ten years.

But my feedback on the survey was to get rid of all the MOC busywork.

I received the same email and believe that both of the recertification options are onerous.

Board certification has turned in to nothing but a money grab for every single specialty. Each specialty board has to come up with more and more things to justify their existence. The oral board exam and MOC requirements must go away immediately. Make it simple. Keep current in your CME’s, you remain board certified.

The oral board exam alone probably keeps 10 ABEM administrative staff employed full tme, year-round. What do you want, for them to become homeless?

We can start a GoFundMe page for them. Seems to be all the rage. Honestly we need to establish real physician-run “boards” across all specialties that are truly concerned about making reasonable efforts to ensure that physicians are competent and qualified rather than the system we have now which is designed to extract every possible dollar out of a physician by making them perform worthless tasks.

Are you saying these individuals are unemployable elsewhere?

I’m sure one of the other boards will happily employ them to come up with more worthless things physicians can do. And of course things that they can charge a lot of money for.

This right here. CME, and only CME.
