Does anyone know if there will be a limit on how many programs one can apply to, during the modified scramble?

Also, can one reapply to programs previously applied to during the regular cycle?

Any info about the new SOAP/scramble will be appreciated, thanks 🙂

Without doing any actual research (which you could do just as easily as I could...so if you're going to be intellectually lazy in your question, I will be intellectually lazy in my answer), I seem to recall a limit of 30 programs you can apply to in the new Scramble.

And yes, you can apply to any program with a spot. Of course, if they didn't like you the first time, it might be worth looking at another program the second time around.

It's not so clear. I've looked all over the NRMP site, and the AAMC/ERAS site isn't much help either.

Last I remember, there were 30 applications on Monday, followed by an additional 20 each day. You could not purchase more, and these all were included with your basic ERAS fee, and can apply to any combination of specialties you might want. But, I can't find any of it in writing.

Thank you, for your reply.

I did try to find the information on the NRMP, AAMC, and ERAS websites, but there is not a lot of information on the new scramble.

Let's say you're applying to a specialty that requires an intern year. I've been told that on your main rank list, it's a good idea to include some intern year programs at the bottom below all of your specialty programs. That way if you don't match to your specialty, you still have a chance at matching to the intern year at least instead of needing to scramble into both.
But if this happens and you only match to an intern program, will you be a part of SOAP so that you can scramble for a position in your specialty? I read that only unmatched applicants are entered into SOAP, and I don't know if you'll be considered "unmatched" in this case.

Although I'm having trouble finding a clear statement from the NRMP, I believe the answer is yes. If you match only to a prelim position, you'd be able to SOAP into any advanced position. But you wouldn't be able to apply to any Categorical positions. Whether it makes more sense to rank prelims and then try to find an advanced spot vs try to get into categoricals (by not ranking prelims) is a complex question without an easy answer.

Has anybody else had trouble viewing the SOAP pdf on the NRMP site? I downloaded the newest versions of adobe reader and flash player but it still just loads a blank pdf. 😕

They sent out an email to everyone today, which I have copy/pasted below:

ERAS Information Regarding SOAP 2012

This communiqué does not infer anything about your match status. ERAS has no information regarding your match status.

Beginning at 1:00 pm ET on Monday, March 12th, the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program, or "SOAP", is set aside for unmatched applicants and ACGME-accredited programs to fill positions that went unfilled during the NRMP Main Match. SOAP occurs between 1:00 pm ET on Monday, March 12th and 5:00 pm ET on Friday, March 16th.

During this period, residency applicants who did not match to a position in the NRMP Main Match may use ERAS to send applications, free of charge, to a maximum of forty five (45) ACGME-accredited programs. This includes both new programs, as well as programs where they applied previously during the ERAS application season. You are eligible for the free applications if your account is paid in full and you have applied to and paid for at least one ACGME-accredited program by 3:00 P.M. ET on Friday, March 9th.

Applicants may still apply or re-apply to a total of 45 ACGME-accredited programs during SOAP from 1:00 pm ET March 12 – 5:00 pm ET March 16. However, a maximum allotted number of submissions are allowed each day. These are absolute maximums – applicants will not be able to apply to more than that during the SOAP cycle, even if you are willing to pay a fee to do so.

SOAP Cycle 1 – Monday, March 12th 1:00 PM – Wednesday, March 14th 11:59 AM
- Allows you to apply or re-apply to a total of 30 ACGME-accredited programs

SOAP Cycle 2 – Wednesday, March 14th 12:00 noon – Thursday, March 15th 11:59 AM
- Allows you to apply or re-apply to a total of 10 ACGME-accredited Programs

SOAP Cycle 3 - Thursday, March 15th 12:00 noon – Friday, March 16th 5:00 PM
- Allows you to apply or re-apply to a total of 5 ACGME-accredited programs

Please consult with your designated dean's office for assistance when applying to ACGME-accredited programs during SOAP. If you have any questions about using ERAS during SOAP, contact our HelpDesk at 202-862-6264 or [email protected] for assistance.
