so i am getting ready to register for the GRE, once in late may/early june and another one in late july right before the change to the new one in august. i will be applying this fall...

my question is, do any of you guys out there know which schools are NOT accepting or DEFINITELY REQUIRING the new GRE? I can't seem to find a lot of info except like a couple schools which say they are not accepting the NEW one. i just want to make sure i sign up for the correct one and not waste money in the end and also prepare properly (i'll be starting to study next week)

thanks everyone!

Ohio State is NOT accepting the new one. If you want to apply to Ohio State for the class of 2016 (matriculating in fall 2012), you MUST take the GRE by July 31st, 2011. This is because they won't be able to obtain the scores from the new exam until too late, so you have to take the old one.

What is the difference between to old GRE and the new one?

I don't think anyone knows for sure. A few of us have had a practice section in the new format when taking the old version (as they test things out) but pretty much all I can say is that it was.... weird. The math section will have a calculator available on-screen, so the math will be a bit more complex. Other than that... wait and see, I guess?

The beta test was my experimental section. There was a calculator, ruler, etc. You could also go back and forth between questions so I don't think it will be adaptive.

If you are applying for the 2012 cycle DO NOT TAKE THE NEW GRE! they have a statement on their site saying that they will not begin mailing scores until Nov. 1. If you're at a school that doesn't care to get them until at least dec, not a big deal. Most schools i applied to required everything by sept-nov 1 (was the range).

the last date the old gre is offered is the last testing spot in July so don't wait to sign up!

straight from the director of admissions yesterday, cornell is NOT accepting the new gre this cycle for this reason.

I have a question about this too:

If we take the old GRE now, and either don't end up applying in the 2012 cycle or get rejected, will we be required to take the new GRE in order to apply in 2013? Or, will the scores still last five years?

That would depend on whether the school wanted old or new GRE scores. I thought I read on here somewhere that LSU wanted applicants to take the new GRE.
