Please be gentle. I've searched and found a lot of great info on this site. I still have a couple questions. I'm very, very green when it comes to all of this.😀 I'm just starting to research my options to become an MFT. The CA BBS website has also been extremely helpful.

My question is...how do a choose an MFT program? I'm inclined to initially lean towards CSUN simply based on location and proximity to home. Is the program "good"? What constitutes a "good program". I've seen the term often on this site. Please help...told you I was green 🙂

The CA BBS website lists MANY accredited programs but I don't know where to begin. Your recs for Los Angeles area MFT progams would be much appreciated!

you say you've searched these forums, yet I have personally answered all of your questions just recently. In fact, those posts are still on the front page.

Read through them and you will see that question is answered plenty of times.

progter, I've actually read your posts regarding MFT in Cali and you address some areas and a couple of schools. (public vs professional and chapman vs pepperdine) I also read in your posts that you are not an MFT student. I didn't find info specifically about the CSUN MFT program so if anyone has experience with the CSUN program or other Los Angeles area (not OC or SD) programs please help, thanks. If I'm simply not finding it and it IS here, please post a link.

my fiance is an MFT

I pretty much know everything there is to know about MFTs in California and when I came to this site there didn't seem to be anyone who really addressed the programs.

I have a post out there somewhere that is pretty recent about what to look for in an MFT program. i believe its in the thread stated "must haves for MFTs"

if you go through that checklist and check it against the programs you are interested in, you can guage whether or not they are good programs. Mainly you are looking for hands on experience. Does the school get you any or do you have to get it on your own? Does the school have a counseling center for students to work in that the public is welcome to?

There are many more in that post and 1 other that you can find rather easily. If you have any questions outside of those, I'll try to answer. Most any California approved MFT program is going to suffice, some are better than others. Personally, I think ppl should steer away from UCSD even tho they claim to be top tier due to being AAMFT accredited and should also stay away from programs that produce graduates w/ less than 500 supervised hours.

I tried to look for UCSD MFT and I couldn't find it.. ^^ Could someone post the link? I would like to see what they say about the program ~😉

what do you guys think about SDSU MFT? any ideas?

Although I am not very educated on MFT programs in Los Angeles, I wonder if I can suggest Antioch University to you? I am a student at the New England campus, which has two MFT programs (MA, PhD) with pretty strong reputations. Antioch Los Angeles doesn't have separate programs in Counseling or MFT (this is the case for now, but with the new Counseling licensure in CA I am sure that sooner or later, separate MFT and Counseling programs may be created), but graduates of AULA's Masters in Clinical Psych program do qualify to test for MFT licensure in CA and many other areas.

Since you're looking for programs in LA, why not stop by some time and maybe have a chat with the faculty? My experience so far has been fantastic.
