Hello,

I am in the midst of the licensure process in New Jersey, and just received a letter that I have fulfilled all of the requirements except for the jurisprudence exam. I was wondering if anyone here has taken the exam before or knows anything about the format of the test (length, difficulty, etc.)... the laws/statutes are available online, but there is no information about the actual exam besides the fact that one exists, so any information would be helpful. Thanks!

Can't speak to the New Jersey one, but I took the Colorado jurisprudence and it was extremely straightforward and easy. Kind of styled like online driving school - you take the exam online but you could google answers as you took it if you needed to - you probably wouldn't need to, though, most of the answers should be very easy for anyone who has been practicing for a while.

Can you please post what you found out? I am also preparing for licensure (taking the EPPP soon) and I can't really find any info online about next steps - no one seems to write anything online about their experience taking the jurisprudence exam. Is it difficult? Was there a long wait to take it? I don't even know if the format is online or in person! If you post about your experience it could probably help many.

The exam is true-false, paper and pencil, in person, "open book." I'm not sure how often they offer it, but they schedule you for a time and day of their choice (Friday mornings seems to be common) once they approve your entire application. I was already licensed in another state so my experience was different, but I believe once you pass the EPPP they schedule you, since they've approved everything by that point. There was not a long wait, other than the absurdity of how inefficient that office is at managing anything that comes their way. The questions are based on the laws/statutes linked on their site. It was reasonably straightforward, but of course they are expecting you to read questions very carefully since you have all the answers at your disposal. You can pay for access to a presentation the NJPA created on it.

It's not bad. They send you a letter about it... it's 25 questions, true/false, open book. The statutes are available online. I didn't pay for access to a presentation (nor did I know that was a possibility) and passed it no problem.

To answer your other questions... my understanding is that they offer it once per month at the main office in Newark, and they won't tell you any information about when future dates may be (I tried. 🙂 ). They only allow a few people to take it at a time, so in theory, you could have to wait a few months to take it. FWIW, my letter said I'd get a notification with the date in two months time (a colleague's said three months), but both of us wound up taking the exam the following month. The NJ office is notoriously slow, but every time I called, they were much more pleasant than the staff in the other state in which I am licensed.

Good luck!

Thank you both so much for posting this! It's really helpful. Sounds like the jurisprudence exam is much more manageable than the EPPP. You've both significantly contributed to lowering my anxiety and the anxiety of anyone else Googling for information.
