Longtime lurker, short of the story is that I recently started a new private job after residency. Unfortunately however, things have changed since I interviewed with the group and started my job, including multiple partners leaving and or retiring in this small group within the year of my start date leaving questions for call coverage. The anesthesia contract with the hospital also ends in the near future and it’s questionable if the contract will be renewed. I learned of these changes only after arrival and starting work and obviously I’m disappointed in these revelations.

I imagine a lot of these risks are inherent to a small practice, and I’m just arriving in a bad time to work here. Obviously leaving to find a new job has come up in my mind since partnership looks like less likely of an option here. My question is in my current contract I have to give a specific amount of time before leaving, what repercussions are there for leaving prior to this period of time?

What is the time period?

I wouldn't recommend you leave before the period of time without speaking with the group and getting some sort of arrangement worked out. Consequences would include litigation over breach of contract and possibly seeking monetary damages in the form or reimbursement for locum coverage. Further, you risk poor recommendations from your group from an employment standpoint and possibly a medical staff standpoint.

If the group contract with the hospital is not renewed, you may not have any problem. In fact you may have a cause of action against the group. If the hospital likes you there may be an opportunity to continue working there as part of a different entity.

Overall I’m not completely bummed about the situation, but I can’t shake the feeling that my hiring is just to bridge the group until it no longer exists (although that may not have been the original intent).

I imagine I’m getting paid less than partners, and so I’ll be working for sub partner pay with no chance of partnership when the group dissolves.

I’m more afraid of the call burden as more people leave. Not exactly what I signed up for.

I guess I’ll bring it up with the group.

What is the time frame for the amount of notice you have to give for resignation? Most often it’s 60-90 days. It often takes longer than that to find a job, interview for a job, accept a job, and get credentialed for a job.

Keep working and start looking again. See how things develop with the current group and get a better feeling for what is going on. I wouldn’t give notice until you have something lined up already or are planning to do locums in the interim. Don’t breach the contract of your first job.
