HI,

I was wondering if anyone has bought and used the new (2007-2008) Kaplan DAT prep-book yet? Does anyone has any comments about this book? Is it any different than the big Kaplan Reivew Notes that comes with the Kaplan course? I would truly appreciate any input.

im currently in the kaplan class, and i have the last edition of the book that youre talking about..and literally word for word its the same as our review notes book. the only difference is that theres no PAT in our review notes(which you have in your book), and there arent any review questions at the end of each chapter in your book like we have in the kaplan book.

The main difference between the two is that if you have both books, Kaplan has $80 of yours instead of just $40! 😉

This is my second year for applying. I bought the Kaplan book last year and did not take the class. I noticed that there is a "new" edition this year. Not wanting to part with hard earned dollars, I took my "old" book to the bookstore, sat down with the "new" book and flipped through the entire book. They are page-for-page the same book. Identical sections, materials, spacing, paging, sample test at the end of the book and answers to the questions. It is as if they took the old book, placed it on a photocopier and wrapped it in a new binding.

The two books are identical in every aspect but one. The table of contents indicates in the "new" version that the "how to use the cd" section starts on 815 where the "old" version indicates that it starts on page 813. The section in both versions starts on 815- the table of contents on the "old" version directs you a page early.

I did not check the disk(both editions come with a cd), since I did not buy the "new" version, although I did notice all of the instructions are verbatim the same-same system requirements, etc. I was very satisfied with the "old" edition cd-it is simply a version of the DAT very similar to the one you will be facing at the testing center. The CD does not have a passwork. Save your money, buy the old version.

I do recommend the Kaplan Organic Chemistry Edge-2nd edition (current version) which can be bought on amazon for $8 plus shipping.

I got the new book on walmart's site for about 45$ (shipping included). The thing I noticed was that there's only an option to unlock the extra online material (which you're entitiled to if you buy either verion) for the new edition. To unlock it, all you have to do is answer what's the last word on a page in the book. Since the basic consensus is that the two editions are identical, I don't think this would be a problem. This might be a scheme for Kaplan to say you HAVE to buy the new version to get the online material. That said, PM me if your old version doesn't work when accessing the online material, and I'll look at my book for you.

no,kaplan currently has $1200 of mine for this class!

Ok, I admit they now have a total of $955 of mine, but hey at least I have their review book now and a bunch of sample problems (not saying it was worth it, but it makes a great door stop).

BTW, no offense, but your dog seriously reminded me of a Gremlin! 😀 (Seriously, though - check out the resemblance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mogwais-in-school-lab.JPG) hint:do NOT feed him after midnight (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gremlin_eating_cookie.JPG) 👎

I hate to beat a dead horse. These are the exact same book. If you want the review notes, Amazon sells the 2001 Kaplan DAT review notes for as little as $8.75 plus postage. I suspect that the only difference is that you won't be the first person reading the notes. While Kaplan spend millions in marketing every year, they apparently don't update their materials very often. Even if they did, what exactly has fundamentally changed in the basic sciences to render materials 4 years old no good substantively? I have always wondered what keeps Kaplan going financially. It remains a mystery.

If you finish the current year DAT and don't plan to retake you can even re-sell them to Amazon. It's all here at

I know it's illegal but I managed to buy all of Kaplan's materials online for about $150. I've got 7 complete tests, the review notes, and flash cards. So if you can't fork out the cash for the course, try looking around online to see what you can come up with.

I'll beat the horse some more also...both the retail and Kaplan course review notes are the same.

My guess is that the newer edition may have updates/corrections. I taught for Kaplan for 1.5 years, and in that time they switched editions on me. I would always tell my students to make corrections in the old edition, but during the last class I taught most of the "mistakes" that I had corrected in the earlier classes were then updated/corrected in the newer edition. so my 0.02 and guess would be that there is no real/major changes, but there might be minute changes/corrections.
