New Openings for Optometry schools????

I would like to know if anyone knows if there is any plan to build more optometry schools. I live in the D.C. metro area and I think its ridiculous that we don't have any optometry schools near us. The closest one is obviously in Penny but I would just like to know if their are more plans. I would love one to be in the nation's capital because it just seems like a no brainer. We have some of the best schools here, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, George Washington, UVA. These schools are relatively close to me and it would be smart to add an optometry school to one of these establishments. Thanks so much. 🙂

Hey, I am in rockville, MD a fellow neighbor and I completely feel your pain. I am going to interview at several schools and air fare is costing me a pretty penny! And that's not considering the crazy amount of tuition already set for optometry school. Wish I could tell you there were some schools being made in the local area, but I am afraid there is already a supposed "over saturation of ODs." If anything, I believe I read up on a new school being made in the Midwest...you know..because there are no schools at all in that area (being sarcastic btw). But I highly doubt there will be any additional institutions granting an OD degree in the near future close to us, at least before you and I complete our degrees.

Thank you so much for replying. I'm glad someone else is feeling the pain I feel. How do they not have a school in D.C.? This doesn't make any sense. The D.C. metro area is the best place to find a job once you finish school. So wouldn't it make sense to have a school here since graduates would find that this area is top-notch when it comes to the job-market? And why would they create an optometry school in the Midwest?

I feel your pain too!! I live in Richmond but go to JMU and i'm dreading having to travel all over the place next year for my interviews. it stinks that we have no in-state optometry schools!

seriously? you guys are complaining?! There are only 2 schools in Canada, only one in english!

I live in TX, and there is rumor of a new optometry school that will be in progress of contruction in 2008. It will be in San Antonio, TX, at the University of Incarnate Word, a private institution.
