Is this a godsend for Canadian citizen but US med school grad?(ie in addition to the failsafe get at the border TN-1)

29+12=41 months enough to finish some residencies without the red tape of J1?

I am not sure but I don't think it will work out as nice as it first seems. First off it is 17 months + 12 months = 29 months. Furthermore it applies to a specific list of fields (STEM) that are listed at that link. MD training has a CIP code 51.1201 which is not included on the list...perhaps if a MS/PhD is part of the training under CIP code 51.1401 it would then apply?

This doesn't affect med student only math and science students, however this is how it will affect us:

H-1B Cap Gap:
An F-1 student on OPT whose employer has filed a timely application for an H-1B on the student's behalf will be able to stay in the U.S. and continue working between the OPT expiration date and the H-1B start date. This would apply to all students on OPT and not just those in STEM fields who are eligible for an extension.
