Its kind of nice to know which new pharmacy schools are being built and/or starting soon. This is what i know so far.

Wingate will start its first pharmacy class this fall.

Texas A & M will open its pharmacy school in 2005.

Yeah, South University is starting this fall. I got a letter from them.

Hey Heyyyyy which Texas A & M?

GVSU (Grand Valley State University) has been toying with starting a pharmacy school for a few years now, and last I checked they were even listed as having candidate status. They're working on a huge new building, and list pharmacy as a possible major. Last I heard, they were worried about their budget, but I couldn't find any info on their website. Maybe something to look into if you're just starting pre-pharm. They're in Grand Rapids, MI.

I don't know , but maybe the creation of more Pharm schools would be negative. More people would become pharmacists, and therefore the dearth of pharmacists would even out. It would lower salaries and make existing pharmacists less valuable and more replaceble. However, the more applications to Pharm School, the more selective the process becomes, and this would most likely help Pharmacy gain more prestige. Any thoughts on this? I'm sure there are both negative and positives.

I am all for less pharmacy schools. The only reason there is a shortage is the chains are building new pharmacies. Once the chains are saturated and salaries start dropping I probably will have to go back to school again. Plus mail order is really taking off these days and unless pharmacists become primary care providers we will just get pushed over once the shortage is over.

Dear God, what you say makes sense, but I can only hope that doesn't happen. I'm only 18, and I picked pharm because I thought I'd always have a job and make decent money. This just makes me more ambivalent. We can never win.

In a few more years we will have ~90 some odd pharmacy programs pumping out ~100 students each per year. Of those, ~30-40 percent from many of those schools may choose hospital/industry over community practice.

There may well be an increase in the numbers of retiring pharmacists, as the baby boomer generation of pharmacists reaches retirement age. At the same time, baby boomers will need their meds...coupled with a medicare prescription drug benefit, there will be an increased demand for pharmacists and pharmacies. Advancements in pharmaceutical and biotech R&D will result in more drugs on the market. (I think I said the same thing in another thread...)

What does this mean? In the near future there will continue to be a shortage of pharmacists. It may eventually plateau...I don't know when that will happen.

Opening a new school comes with a careful business plan. Why would you want to open a school and within 10years or so, you will be out of business?

Almost every new business comes with a careful plan. Does that mean that they all succeed? What's the failure rate of new restaurants these days? Something like 90%? I'm not saying that any of these schools are destined to close down, but it's possible, eventually.

It really isn't fair to expect pharmacy schools to STOP opening and class sizes to remain small once YOU have been admitted, especially when you're going to a school that just opened last year.

Learn to appreciate grads from new schools, especially when you are looking for someone to fill in while you're on vacation, etc.
