have any of you guys heard about the recently submitted applications to recognize Craniofacial Pain and TMD as 11th and Impant Dentistry as 12th specialties from the ADA? So may be in the future, we will have people who can officially claim to be " OMF implantologists" (sounds very glamorous to the patient!) and "CF Pain specialists".
I think it would be total BS if this would happen as these are such gray areas and would also steal away the glamor from OMFS and other specialties...
ps: am already unhappy with the fact that OMF radiology exists! what would be wrong if that had been a part of OMF pathology...those poor guys don't do much anyways...

Most of these specialties apply every year and get turned down. The problem is to create a specialty, you have to demonstrate that there is a need for your services that is not being provided by other providers.

When you say these specialties apply, who is submitting them?

Probably groups of clinicians who long ago limited their practices to certain services, made contact with similar clinicians accross the country, and vowed to get the recognition they deserve.

the word "vowed" sounds too funny  anyways what will be the future and versatality of glamorous specialties like OMFS, Pros etc etc, when "OMF Implantolgists" who "specialize" in placing and restoring implants and "Craniofacial Pain Specialists" who "cure CF pain" (which might probably include anythng from night guards to endo therapies !)emerge.....i mean that would certainly limit the focus of each specialty and probably breed anal research but the real charm of any specialty is to get diversity within it! i do hope that these crazy applications get turned now and not just shelved...

anal research ...
ummnh, don't you have to be a Proctologist to do that kind of research?!

I wouldn't mind if craniofacial pain became a specialty. I would refer them every damn one of my TMD patients.

Agreed. There's a great TMD specialist here in the Phoenix valley that gets lots of referrals, from what I understand.

You know, there's plenty of "TMD specialists" out there that you can refer to, regardless of whether or not the ADA recognizes the specialty. Don't let that stop you.
