I am an ECFMG with a 7 year rule to pass Step1 Step2 and Step3. Unfortunately I did not pass Stepck in time and my Step1 expired. My StepCS is still valid. I must retake Step1 and Step2ck before dec 2012 or else my CS will expire. The 7 year rule resets itself from the day I passed CS. I also unfortunately took Step2ck 4 times in a state that has a 4 attempt maximum rule.

.I checked what I believe is your examination record and find that you still need to complete and pass the USMLE Step 2CK. At this time the way that the USMLE retake policy works is as follows:.
. .
.At this time the Step 2 has no time limit in which to be completed however, it does have an attempt limit that will go into effect on January 1, 2013 in that you will only be allowed six attempts to pass the exam and then no longer be qualified to take any of the USMLE exams. This applies to all the USMLE Step exams. .
. .
.I would suggest to you, at this time, that you complete and pass the Step 2CK and once you have completed and passed the Step 2CK you can then qualify to take the Step 3 for many states that do not have a time limit. States such as DE, FL and NE do not currently have time limits and you can qualify to take the Step 3 for those states. You do not have to travel to those states to take the Step 3 you can test in your local area you are just using the state to complete and pass the Step 3. The medical boards do not care what state you took the exam for, just that you have passed the exam and then complete the requirements to qualify for licensure. .
. .
.So, reapply when you are ready to take your Step 2CK, pass it and then contact our offices on applying for Step 3 for those states that do not have a time limit. Once you have completed and passed all four of the USMLE Steps you can then contact a state medical board to see if they will sponsor you to retake those exams that put you over the seven year time limit. .
. .
.I hope this helps you and I wish you success in your future..
. .
.Sincerely, .

Obviously the rules will be changing nationwide in January 2013 to enable applicants to have 6 attempts at each Step.
The state I am in currently has a 4 attempt limit at step2ck.
I cannot help but think the rules are changing to allow for the problems people are having with the new computerized (embedded patient encounters videos) and other technical snags that maybe people without paper and pencil exams did not have.
In the last ten years, my education has gone from floppy disks to cd's to flash drives and mp3's and videos. which is all good for me because I end up being an audio learner anyway. The likes of medpod101.com is right up my alley.
I guess what I am wondering is this: what does it take to have a state like mine with the present 4 attempt rule come into sync with the new changing national regulations?
Does anyone know about any other changes that will be occurring?
I am hopeful that if I get an 85+ on each Step1 and Step2 that I will still be able to get a residency despite this snag; but I want to avoid such issues in the future.
I would appreciate any feedback.
