Hi,

I am a new member, but i have already been on this site, viewing the forum for a quite awhile. i have some questions about applying to d-school and i'd appreciate any insight..

1. do dschools prefer a higher gpa with an easier major> say health sci? or a little lower gpa with say a chem major?? i enjoy both fields, i just want to know which is preferred or best to think about.

2. do dschools look fondly when students go abroad? im going to london spring 07 and applying when i get back. ill be back verrrry early, like april to begin the entire app process till aug.

thanks!!!

1. My guess (yes, guess...99.9% of us have never been directly involved in AdCom) would say higher GPA in an easier major. But nail the pre-req's with the highest grade possible.

2. Depends on what you do. You mean Spring break? Or studying abroad. If it's the latter, I think it will help and give you something to talk about in your interview. I can speak for UCSF and say they were very impressed with my world traveling experience.

my advice is to gather all your resources and apply asap. your chances are improve greatly.

honestly, you will look more attractive if you have something tougher than health sci/exercise phys./nutrition. many of the people i have talked to consider these majors cookie cutter, and pretty basic. if you are competing with someone with say a biochemistry major, then you are comparing apples to oranges. but if studying something harder is going to kill your gpa then stick with the health sci.

anything out of the ordinary will help, but don't bank on your abroad experience as your make it or break it into dental school. research, shadowing, and volunteering all trump studying abroad.

few days ago i saw the stats for one of the applicants who majored in spanish. he got more than 5 acceptance letters, but anoterh applicant majored in mechanical engineering with 3.1 gpa and got 1 acceptance. if science gpa is high and overall gpa is high then it doesn't make a difference what major you have.

spanish and health sci are completely diff. IMO, if your major in something non-science related and do well in the pre-reqs you will have a leg up on most applicants b/c adcoms are looking for diversity.

yeah i think im going t ostick with ba of chem rather than bs of chem.. i do research, lots of it since hs.i worked in a dental office in hs and i will shadow this summer. im askin bc my gpa is kind of borderline. 3.34 cum, 3.3 sci and id like toraise it w some buffer classes
