I know that the “ I have an A- in orgo will I get in” posts are annoying but I am looking for advice from people who will be burtly honest with me. Ok here it goes my cum. GPA is a 2.7. I have 3semesters and a summer left not including this summer which I am taking summer courses none related to science. I still have to take orgo 1+2 physics 1 chem 2 and English. I still have 14 credits of my bio major left. My old grades, some are great other’s are not by what is done is done. My GPA was higher at 2.9 but through the year it dropped for many reasons, family issues, personal issues, last fall I received psychoeducational testing and found out that I have a very bad reading disorder. It was not picked up earlier for many reasons I just slipped through the cracks but I’m in college and now I finally for the 1st time since I have been in college I am slowing learning how I learn, am getting the accommodations I need and how to study. Med school is something I have wanted since I was 15. I know it is not going to be easy and I am going to have to work harder now than I worked all thru school. I have volunteering and a daycare and hospital, I am a EMT and with a agency, I work for my school’s residential life, I am in a program since freshmen year in academic support for minority students I also have a paying job. I have 7 people for letter’s of rec. all I need is a science prof. My question is if from now til I graduate got B’s or better in all my classes, high 20’s or low 30’s on my MCAT’s would a med/DO school give me a shot?

Chances are you're going to have to do a post-bac. A lot of schools (DO included) won't even look at your application unless your gpa is at least a 3.0. Numerically, I don't know if it's possible for you go get your gpa up to that level in three semesters. What I would suggest is that you nail, and I mean nail, any of your med school pre reqs in the time that you have left. Also, consider retaking any pre-reqs that you scored a C or below in.

I really wouldn't suggest that you take the mcat until you are good and ready. By that I mean, scoring at least a 30 or above on the practice tests. You might want to sign up for a review course too.

MD schools might be out of the reach but you sound like a pretty interesting person who is well-rounded; DO schools might look at your application more favorably. So try really hard to get your gpa above a 3.0, take the mcat and nail it, and apply really really really early. Good luck to you, man, and remember that not all hope is lost. It just might take you a little longer to get to med school, but try to remember that in the end it's all worth it to accomplish your dream.

B's will not help raise your GPA above 3.0 if your GPA is a 2.7 You need to try to get A's. read the FAQ in the forum about retakes and GPA calculation. If you have any D's or F's you can retake those to make your GPA rise more quickly.

i also have a sub 3.0 gpa as it stands... and for various reasons... at it usually is lol. on top of that, i only have a year left at school. but im looking forward to redoing 6 science classes next sem, and hopefully getting that 3.0 - i will be applying and hoping that i can just update the schools with the transcript during jan.
so yea... i dont think all hopes are lost or anything like that... some of us just get that "kick in the butt" a little later than others... lol.

good luck!
