Hey all,

I'm new here and I first wanted to say hello! I also have a question that I'm hoping you guys can shed some light on.

I was wondering if any of you have opinions on how bad W's look on transcripts?
I'm contemplating dropping a course (Orgo 1) mainly because my practice has picked up (I'm an Equine Dental Tech) and I'm too busy for the work load the course requires. I've already got 1 W and I'm worried this will start to look like a trend. Its not that I can't pass the course, its just that I know I could do so much better if I took it in the spring- and I don't want to go into Orgo 2 with anything less than an A. I've heard its very cumulative.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Meredith

A W or even 2 isn't a deal breaker if there's an extenuating circumstance, but it doesn't sound like that's the case with you. Someone chime in if you disagree, but I think the general consensus is that you should never let your academics suffer because of extracurriculars unless it's absolutely necessary. If it's because you NEED to work to pay your tuition or so that you can have food on the table, that's a different story. But if it's because your practice is "picking up" don't you have the choice to slow it down?

I highly doubt that adcoms will be impressed with your equine dentistry practice so much if it's something that's going to tarnish your academic history (especially because you already have another W).

W's aren't pretty... I'd avoid it whenever you can.

Minnerbelle,

I appreciate the honesty.
I do actually need the money- for tuition, horse feed, bills, they add up and as it is I'm not working as much as I need to be. And I agree with you about extracurricular activities not causing grades to drop, but I don't think that works counts, at least I don't think it should, even if it does. Again I'll weigh your opinion into my decision.

Thanks! 🙂

I have 2 W's, and recently met with Wisconsin Vet School admissions. They are not bothered by them, because when I did take them, I got good grades. I was also a Div. 1 college athlete, and during the sports season all of the traveling can make you miss quite a bit of class. The classes with the W's were tough upper division classes. I think that as long as you have a solid GPA, GRE, and can explain the reason well in the explanation statement, you will be alright.

Would you rather have a W and then take the class later and get an A, or keep it now, maybe get a C and let other areas suffer because of all the time you put in for the class? You have to make the call to see if you can push through this this semester and still get a good grade, or just take it later.

Thanks guys you are very helpful. You're right about not letting myself get overloaded. From now on I'm just not going to be able to be full time. It's a learning curve for me. And you are also right about my other grades suffering. So again guys thanks for the input, if anyone else has an opinion please feel free.

I had 1 W on my transcript and it was never brought up. I also got a C in Orgo 1 and an A in Orgo 2, so don't buy into the "I HAVE to have an A in Orgo 1 to do well in Orgo 2"
