Hi,

I already tried searching for my answer but didn't find it.

If I am starting pharmacy school this fall, when can I get an intern license? I am pretty sure that it is after the first year of pharmacy school but I can't find a straight answer.

Also, if I work for a chain, even if I am not considered an intern for NYS, would I be considered and intern for my company? Hopefully that would include a pay raise? 😉

Does anyone know what the going rate for a first year intern in NYS is???

Thanks in advance.

You'll get your intern license by the end of your 3rd year of pharmacy school.

Thank you.

I had thought that is was at the end of the third year too, then someone told me that if it is a 4 year professional program it is after the first year. That didn't make sense to me because I wouldn't know half the stuff I would need to know after only one year.

Oh well, that's what I get for listening to a friend of a friend who I don't even know. 🙄

Thanks again hcp! 🙂

A Limited (Intern) Permit must be issued in order to practice pharmacy under supervision. You must apply for, and have been issued, an intern permit before starting your supervised pharmacy practice. All applicants except graduates of ACPE accredited programs leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree must complete an internship experience.
You may be granted credit for internships completed in other states, if the internship meets New York State and the other state's requirements as verified on Form 4.
Limited (Intern) Permit

Anyone who has not applied for and received an intern permit from the Office of the Professions, State Board of Pharmacy is not authorized to begin an internship in New York and credit will not be granted for such practice. Only internships done in a registered pharmacy are acceptable.
The preceptor assumes the responsibility for training the intern even though the intern may practice occasionally under the supervision of another pharmacist in the same pharmacy.
Application: http://www.op.nysed.gov/pharm5.pdf

To be certified by the college for students who have COMPLETED at least the first professional year of study.

Right after P1 you can be licensed as a pharmacy intern (called student pharmacist in some other states), usually the school applies for the license/permit for the whole class by the end of P1. The License is good for 5 years, and I think it is renewable for one time.

the poster above me is correct. At least at my school, as a class you apply for a intern permit at the end of the P1 year, you get it by summer and then you act as an intern thereafter. I know, because i just went through the process. The chain that you work with might consider you an intern prior to this, however, that only means you have a higher pay. You do not get to do any intern activities because the state law is stricter and you always follow stricter law. but you would have to talk to your district manager about that.

Is there any way to get your information off the website when the intern license expires?
