Can any current or past residents comment on the NYVA (Manhattan) residency programs, specifically the perio program? How does the training compare to fully university-based programs in your opinion? Thanks.

are you going to be a GPR at the Manhattan VA this year? I will be there, I know one other resident from my graduating class but do not know the other 3. As far as their perio program, they do not have room in their budget to accept a resident every year so they accept one resident every other year. They will be accepting one this year to begin July 2009. All specialty residents at the VA do their didactic training at NYU dental school right across the street. I have spoken to many periodontists and general dentistry faculty alike and all have said that the program at the VA is a great one, in fact, one of their strong suits. The head of the perio department at the VA, Dr. Kasangy, is very well-respected by his peers and it seems like they do tons of work there because I believe that the Manhattan VA is the only VA in the surrounding area that has both a perio and endo department so both fields get almost all of the veterans referred to them for work. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. I will be doing my GPR there next year. 1 every other year seems pretty intense - I haven't seen a central website or anything like it, so it's hard to find out this information. If you know anything else about the program, I would appreciate it. Thanks again, and I look forward to meeting in July!
