I'm just curious. Suppose I finish med school in Australia as an international student, is it very difficult to find internship spots in New Zealand, being a non-NZ-citizen myself?

Good qn. I too would appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this..

if no one here can help me with this, can someone at least point me the direction where I can get these info - i.e. gov websites, forums where NZ internationals students hang out?

many thanks and much appreciated

I have no idea either, you'll probably need to contact the auckland med school about it if you haven't already.

The only forum I know where nz international med students might go to is http://www.unifriend.co.nz/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=240

Unfortunately the last time anyone posted in the med school section was august.

Try this:

From what I've heard it isn't a problem, but I don't think you get first round choice and are considered after local graduates in the match. 👍 Goodluck

This is all hearsay but from what I've heard yes. Even International students training in New Zealand schools find it difficult to get an internship there as there are limited number of spots, most end up coming to Oz. However it's relatively easier to get an RMO job in NZ then an internship.

anyone has any idea if DOs (trained in US, obviously) can get a job in NZ?

Yeah I think you should be able to get a place... somewhere... as an international australian graduate. Having said that, not all the NZ international students manage to match every year.

Don't know about DOs.. from what I remember reading somewhere they look at DOs on a case by case basis.

It would probably be possible to get an internship somewhere in New Zealand but you'd want to have fairly good reasons for doing so and check out the conditions carefully, hen I looked into it the rates of pay were significantly less in NZ, plus there's the fact that you get paid overtime in Australia whereas in NZ it's factored intot he salary, but somehow it's much easier to call your butt out of bed when you know you're getting directly paid for it.

The pay in NZ is not that bad.. probably around $65k NZ for an intern... 70+ 2nd year etc. We get paid based on runs, that as you have said have somehow 'factored in' the overtime requirements and general ****iness of the run.. eg. surgical relief 'run' pays ~$95k 'per annum' (although you only do it 3 months)

I've got a job as a second year HMO in Victoria, which only pays ~$58k AUD... for a purely theoretical 38 hour work week though.

The difference is in NZ we also have free meals.. which can translate ~$100 extra tax free a week (ie. 5k tax free per year) in addition the hospitals generally cover all medical associated costs.. eg. practising certificate, fully pay for any medical courses you want to do including airfares and accommodation. This is a lot of extra money to think about, given these courses generally cost ~$3k + flights + accommodation (and are essentially mandatory for most surgical fields). I think NZ has 6 weeks of annual leave (ie. 30 days) which is more than oz as well.

I expect to make... maybe a little more in oz after paying for courses etc. Feeling like you are working for 'free' sucks though.. looking forward to overtime claiming 😀 I think its more important to look at the long term; Oz consultant (surgical) salaries are far higher, and in general the country is progressing at a faster rate compared to NZ

*I keep hearing that NZ surgical specialities are a lot easier to get into than their respective (and identical) oz counter parts.. don't know if that's true.. but maybe something else you might want to consider (ie. ease of entering fields) when choosing NZ vs Oz

Hi,
I have completed 5.5 yrs MBBS course in INDIA including Internship for 1yr. How would i be able to secure entry for higher education in Australia and New Zealand, preferably in Surgery and also
what are the other requirements to gain admission. Could you also tell me and clarify a big doubt.
While working in Australia would i be getting a stipend or other facilities.
I would be appearing for my USMLE part 1 soon and also SET and NZREX. I would also like to apply for the postgraduate course in surgery.
Kindly get back to me as soon as possible.

Thanks
