I am new to this forum.
I am a foreign medical graduate and want to pursue my career in psychology.

I would really appreciate if anyone can help me with my qtns

1 - How many yrs is a Masters program, a Phd program and a combined master + PhD program ?

2 - For each of the above mentioned program do we need a general GRE or a General + Subject GRE along with Toefl ?

3 - When we talk abt subject GRE. wht subject is that. Is it Psychology in general or specific areas in Psychology?
Wht study material is needed for the same and how many months on an avg is the time needed to prepare for Genral GRE and Subject GRE ?

4 - Any website to look for good and less expensive programs in or near New Jersey and New York ( anywhere in North east )

It can be from 1-2 years to get a masters, and a Ph.D. is between 4-7 years. The combined programs are about the same as a Ph.D. on it's own. There is no real benefit from what I see to split them up. I am sure that exceptions do exist.

Depends on the program. They all have different requirements, many will want all 3, some will only want General GRE and TOEFL.

Psychology in general, there are study guides that will help.

That depends on how long it takes you to score above a 1200 General combined score and over (hopefully) a 700 subject score. Some people can do this without prep, others might take an entire year.

You want the book, "The insiders guide to graduate programs in clinical and counseling psychology." That's your best source.

What Mark said.

Also, the way I see it, the only good reason to split up masters and PhD is if you can't get into a combined program right off the bat (assuming you are getting them both in psychology, a master's in a different area is another matter and can be valuable in certain situations). I'm hard pressed to think of any other reason.

The Insider's Guide is definitely the book to get. As for programs in NY/NJ and inexpensive....probably not. Housing/Living expenses are REALLY high in that area. Even if you get a fully funded program, it still is going to cost you some pretty decent scratch, unless you can find subsidized housing/ on-campus housing.
