Hey everyone,

I'm a resident physcian but have a young brother who is a junior in high school interested in pharmacy. He's only 16 but would probably be interested in applying to the 6 year programs right out of high school.

My question for you folks is what kind of things can he do to "boost up" his very immature CV? Does applying for a pharm tech job sound like a good idea? I've read that many pharm techs start out in high school and learn "on the job" but I'm not sure what the whole process is.

Are there any other jobs/internships/activities that you guys recommend him doing at this point in time to help his future application?

Have him do what you did in high school....become active in school activities. Does he play a sport, play in the band, participate in student govt? Have him get in a club which might involve leadership skill development. Have him volunteer for an organization - thru church, a civic group, the Red Cross, a food distribution center, etc...

Personally, I think 16 is too young to have a part-time job except during school holidays & summer. Its just my feeling that kids need to develop a good balance between work (which at his age is school), play and family responsibilities. He also needs to be developing good opposite sex relationships - at this age....seeing movies among friends, getting together for football games, stressing about asking a girl/guy out for the winter formal is all part of his normal age related activities.

If there is an independent pharmacy nearby....he could stop by and speak with the pharmacist. Perhaps ask him if there is a day during Christmas break he might just come by & observe what goes on. Then try to have him arrange a day again. In this way...he gets a dialog going & the pharmacist feels like a mentor. Then perhaps next summer, he might be able to get a job.

Admissions committees like to see well rounded students who are capable of doing the academic work & have shown consistency in their activities.

Also...have him climb on here & read or participate in the forums on SDN!😉
