Hi everyone, I've been a lurker on the boards for a few weeks now and decided I'd join and introduce myself. I'm a pre-vet student from WV and will hopefully be applying to vet school within 2 years. I only have a physics course, my organic chemistry courses, biochemistry course, and GRE to take before I've fulfilled all my requirements. As it stands now, I am transferring to a vet tech program where I will be finishing up these prereqs.

So, glad to meet you all!

Welcome! What tech program are you transfering to? (if you can say)

I'll be attending the Vet Tech program at Morehead State University in Kentucky. We have one here in WV, but Morehead's program is far better, and is actually cheaper.

Well from a fellow tech, Good Luck and Congrats. Too bad they dont have a technician student network..well they probably do but I just dont know about it. Too busy with this one. hahahahaha

I've actually looked long and hard for a vet tech forum. But, anyway, I'm first and foremost a pre-vet student. 🙂

So if you dont mind me asking then, why transfer to vet tech? Backup plan? I only ask bc personally it hasnt helped me my application process all that much. Experience wise, its been key. Its also helped me get " I wanna do everything" mentality out of my head.
What are your vet experience like?

Its definitely helped me get out of the "I want to do everything" mindset. This summer after working at a clinic for the first time I KNEW that if I didn't get into vet school I wanted to become a vet tech. It was also down to either (1) stay at my current school and finish up my B.A. degree while finishing up my prereqs and, if I don't get into vet school, go to a vet tech program for 2 years, or (2) transfer to a vet tech program now and finish up my prereqs there and have a full time job in two years if I don't get into vet school. I think it was definitely the right choice for my situation.

It will also help with my experience. There are almost NO equine vets in my area. As a vet tech student, I'll be able to work hands on with horses as part of my studies as well as working part time on their farm. There's no way I'd be able to get that kind of equine experience around here.

Sounds like you have a good plan. I like your reason for going to tech school to get your equine experience but I wonder what the vet school adcoms will think about it. When I interviewed at tech program, they flat out told me that if I had any thoughts of going to vet school they wouldnt accept me. Of course that was in 1992. Hopefully things have changed. I had the exact reasons as you, if I didnt get in I needed a job and secretarial school wasnt gonna cut it. LOL

Well, I can see how they'd say that if the only reason you wanted to get into a tech program was for experience and had no real desire to actually be a tech. But, as with you I'm assuming, I really do want to be a tech if I can't get into vet school. I'm definitely NOT spending $20k just for equine experience.

(God Im just putting my foot in my mouth all over the place) No, No, No, i didnt mean it that way, I just meant that they will inevidibly ask you why you made that decision and I thought your reasoning was well justified by your comments. And yes your correct if not VET, then tech.

:welcome: Love the pic.

Ohhh, I got ya. My fault, should have read more closely.

Hello from Morehead Ky:welcome: If you plan on taking the rest of your pre-reqs here PM me and maybe I can offer some insight as to which professors to take or avoid.

Thanks, I'll definitely take you up on that. 🙂

My favorite tech forum is VSPN. The website is http://www.vspn.org. They have pages for vet tech students, specialty techs, different aspects of clinical work, and etc. You might check it out.
