Hi,

I am trying to make something of the data released by NRMP. There are two issues that I cannot completely understand. Everything below refers to non-US IMGs, unless otherwise specified.

#1: What do "applicants withdrawn from the Match" and "applicants with no ranking" mean? For the first one, I understand the meaning of the phrase, but I am wondering about the reasons. The way I see it, some portion of these applicants are those who obtained pre-match positions. What about the other ones?

For the second one, I do not understand wether they refer to applicants who did not supply a ROL, or to applicants who weren't ranked by any program.

Actually, it could be the exact opposite, and those who never submitted ROLs are those who got pre-match, but I strongly doubt it.

Moreover, where are those candidates who did not receive their final ECFMG Certification by Match Day? Are they "Withdrawn" or "No ranking"?

#2: I need to understand whether PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions for programs that require a prelim year are additive or "inclusive". To explain that question, let me give you an example:

There are 463 positions offered for Anesthesiology PGY-1, and 820 positions offered for PGY-2. I know that some Anesthesiology programs do offer PGY-1 positions themselves (CAO) and they also offer PGY-2 positions (CA-1). Bottom line, from the data above, does it mean that there were 463+820=1,283 gas positions in total, or were there just 820, out of which 463 offered CAO, and 820-463=357 only offered CA-1 (their applicants going elsewhere for the first year)?

Thanks, and I really hope one can understand the above blabbering.

Applicants "Withdrawn from the match" are either:

1) those willingly self-withdrawn from the match (usually because they have signed a pre-match contract but sometimes for other reasons, usually personal)

or

2) withdrawn by the NRMP, usually because they haven't completed all their exams by the time of ROL submission; or some other match violation.

Applicants do NOT have to have ECFMG Certification by Match day. You are ionly required to have completed all the exams and other prcedures except for final graduation by submission of ROL. Therefore, applicants aren't withdrawn from the match because they don't have the certificate but because they have either not finished all the Steps or have failed them, not paid ECFMG fees, etc.

Applicants with "No Ranking" are those who did not submit a ROL. This is either:

1) because the applicant did not submit a ROL for whatever reason and did not formally withdraw from the match. These could be those who signed a pre-match contract and didn't withdraw from the match even though they and their program are required to notify NRMP,

or more commonly,

2) the applicant who did not interview at any programs or did not care to rank any programs which he/she may have interviewed at.

To answer the question regarding PGY1/PGY2, it is the former. The numbers for each year are separate, so you add them for the total number of spots.

Thank you very much. The datasheet makes much more sense to me now. I am really grateful.

Lots of military people are in the "Withdrawn from match" category. Many of us registered and set up interviews in case we were given a civvoie deferral, but were then taken by military residencies. We were then required to withdraw.
