Newer, better Propofol?

I recently completed a survey for a medication that was described as a newer, better propofol for moderate sedation. It may be marketed to non-anesthesiologists for use in GI, Pulm, Pain procedures.

I forgot the name of the drug but it sounded like a propofol analog.

Anyone know the name and is there any data on this stuff?

Newer yes, better not sure.
It's Propofol Phosphate, a pro drug that becomes propofol:

And the drug is called Neuprox.

I was thinking of fospropofol (that's who funded the survey).

MGI PHARMA : Aquavan(fospropofol)


i am of the opinion that non-anesthesiologists should not provide any of these without some other advanced training.

I use fentanyl and versed for pain procedures at low doses and have been trained to do so in an ACGME Pain Fellowship. I had no experience with propofol and therefore do not use it.

And therein lies the problem. MG Pharma, the maker of Aquavan, is mainly a GI drug company, and is developing and intends to market this drug specifically to non-anesthesia providers such as GI docs and "sedation nurses". Very, very dangerous.

I think Aquavan (fospropofol) is much further along in development than the Vyrex (propofol phosphate) product.

by the time the gi docs get permission to use this drug without supervision there will be no more screening colons.. everyone will opt for a radiologic study that is prepless..
