Though my application is spotless aside from my overall GPA, the general consensus from an abundance of sources is that I will not get in this year. Don't get me wrong, I have every intention on being that one guy that somehow got in, if I'm given a shot at an interview I'm golden-- but realistically those chances are slim because my app probably won't even be seen by most if they sift out the low GPA folks.

There seems to be no truth to being able to overshadow a low GPA with a strong app.

I am hoping to at least get into an invitation only postbac where I'd then be matriculated into the school fall 2014. But if this doesn't happen then I'm not at all sure what to do. I don't have the means to take more classes, I could work as an EMT for $8/ hour... Continue volunteering..

But taking/retaking classes is going to be the only thing that could help my application at this point so everything else would be kinda worthless fluff (as far as the app, I'll still personally gain more). Suggestions?

It depends on how low the gpa is. What is yours?

Also, from what I hear, those programs with very high linkages are also relatively hard to get into, so if your gpa is super low, they might be difficult as well.

c3.0 (star wars pun?) s3.1

Yes those postbacs are hard to get into. But I've been told I stand a chance at one because my app is good, with a 3.7 last 2 years, and these post bacs like people who are realt strong candidates but are lacking in gpa. I also have a strong connection to one because I've worked with the person that runs the post bac admissions.

Getting in with a 3.0 is a pretty lofty goal unless you're a URM.

yeah definitely need the post-bacc, and you can make up for a "low" gpa with stellar ecs, high mcat etc, but in reality a "low" gpa that can be atoned for in such a situation is more along the lines of a 3.4-ish

Well I kinda am a URM, I appear white but my dad is straight out if Africa and I wasn't raised American in the slightest. I am also really economically disadvantaged, and had a stupid amount of tragedies occur the first few years of college. And I do have very strong ECs-- the total package: diverse and abundant volunteering both clinical and non, research complete with publications, great leadership, great LORs, great PS, I have also never failed an interview 16-0.
No need to discuss those details on this thread though. What is the best thing you think I can do during the 2012-2013 year? I'm thinking I'll find away to retake chem 1, physics 1, and bio 1 (those were hard when I was a baby freshy). That's probably all I can afford to do though. Any other thoughts?

A really, really high MCAT score might compensate for low GPA... Maybe a 38+?

Either you are or you aren't a URM...there is no "kinda" box to check 😉

Retakes aren't going to help much if you already have hundreds of credits. AMCAS doesn't do grade replacement. Have you considered DO? They have a nice grade replacement policy.

Otherwise you would probably benefit greatly from an SMP.

A bad gpa is like getting a tattoo on your face. It's not easy to overlook or get rid of.
