Has anyone received the info from NHSC regarding their scholarship program? On page 1 it says that they can send you to Puerto Rico, Guam, Marianas, Samoa or Micronesia. All very nice places, but how bout the underserved in the U.S.? I don't mind giving two years to serve the underserved pop., but I don't know about these other places. Just wanted let anyone know if they are applying for this scholarship.

All those places *are* the US, which is why they can send you there.

I had the scholarship and ended up cancelling it...and paying it back during my MSII year for that very reason.....

MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL THE FINE PRINT...I went through hell to get rid of it..and couldn't be more happy to be done!!!!

what's so bad about paying your time back overseas? you get a regular salary and a once in a lifetime chance to work somewhere people go for vacation. guam isn't bad. I lived there for 3 years. puerto rico and samoa would be interesting for a few years and you can leave as soon as payback is done.also when you apply for nhsc you get to pick a region. if you don't pick a region with those areas in it you can't get sent there. they can only send you to the place of greatest need in your region if you don't arrange a site on your own.

I talked to someone at NHSC and they said that NHSC is not available for students attending a school that hasn't received full accreditation (graduated their 1st class). They did say that Loan Repayment is an option for when you get out of school. Only 1 out of every 7 get the scholarship and a lot higher percentage (not sure how much) get the Loan Repayment. $50,000 total for year 1 and 2, $35,000 for each years 3 and 4, $15,000 for all the years after that until loan paid off if you work in a hospital/clinic that has a high rating. I want to work in Mississippi or New Orleans and this is where I want to settle. There are a couple of hospitals and clinics on NHSC site that would allow me to apply for the loan repayment when I start working. Also, check with your state. I also know that GA has something for students planning to stay in-state, but they haven't started working with PCOM-GA yet.

Thanks for the info Biosail. I guess there will be advantages/disadvantages to going to our brand new school. I'd like to know more about what GA offers to stay in the state, because I love it here and don't plan to leave.
