I have seen posts from students contacted or not contacted by field consultants after their NHSC interviews, and was wodneirng what that was about. I haven't heard from them, but have been out of town (but I do have a machine that isn't full.)
I am concerned that I am missing somehting, or, worse yet, that I haven't been called becuase I didn't make the cut!

Has anyone been through this and knows what is going on?
I am getting pretty curious, and of course the NHSC website is now help.

Also, I know it is pathetic that I don't just check myself, but anyone know what is on that CD? (I promise to read nad look at it all before accepting the scholarhsip-don't worry!)

thanks, form me, and everyone else who is curious,

The National Health Service Corps.

Basically...
the governement pays for your med school (or PA, dental, etc) adn then you owe that many years of service, working as a medical professional in an underserved area.

It is a compettive progrma, an application and interview, in the spring before the fall for which you wnat support.

There is a website (google NHSC to find it.)

Hope that helps.

here's the link to the web site....

if you like working with the underserved and you know that primary care is for you-- it is a wonderful program!! (at this point i just hope i get it🙂)

msl,
Not only did my field consultant never contact me, he didn't even answer my e-mail. Ouch. You would have thought that there were enough field consultants (and few enough people who bothered to write) that they would be able to answer all inquiries. I don't know whether this means anything as far as acceptance- maybe some consultants are a lot more active than others- but it doesn't seem good. It won't be too much longer before we know; NHSC sends out acceptances in early August, alternates at towards the end of the month, and if you haven't heard by September 1, the news is almost certainly bad. Good luck!

Hi alina_s and other SDNERS,

I felt a cold chill reading about these field consultants because I too have not been contacted by anyone. I am not going to call since it seems we're going to get word soon anyway. Who knows what field consultants mean (really! anyone know!?)?

Alina_s, I hope you don't mind my asking where you learned that we would hear about acceptances in August--and especially that if we do not hear something by the end of August...curtains!?

Thanks a lot for any useful information, and good luck to all.

hey guys,

hard for me to say (because i know if i hadn't been contacted by a consultant and other people had i would probably be annoyed or worried etc too) but i'd say its nothing really to worry about. since there is one consultant that sees over several states, i'm sure they work very independently and have their own styles. Secondly, I honestly think they function a lot more with scholars and people on loan repayment AFTER schooling-- that is they are more of a support for people finding placements and starting out their careers etc. at least that is how the guy who spoke with me sounded. perhaps the guy who presides over ohio is just gung-ho and wanted to say hello to some of the applicants.

i really really really doubt he has ANY say in the scholarship program, and i'm certain there is no guarantee that getting contacted or not getting contacted has any correlation to whether or not we'll hear good or bad news in a month.

i'd say since very few of us have heard anything from these consultants, lets attribute it to sampling error! 😛

Roady,
I applied last year and heard from a several friends (and this message board) about the acceptance/alternate/rejection letters. I'm not certain but I think that my rejection letter didn't come until a few weeks after whatever the final date was supposed to be.

I take it back- after a few weeks, the field consultant did respond to my query and is actually being very thorough. Not sure why there was the delay but he is answering my questions and looking into notes on my interview, which was a weird and uncomfortable experience.
