I really want to apply for this scholarship, but the only thing holding me back is my family. If it were just me, I'd be up for spending a few years in rural Montana or inner city Chicago, or whatever. But I have a spouse and kids to think about. There's a limit to how far into the boondocks you can drag a bunch of teenagers who are used to city life!

Will they literally send me wherever they want me to go? Or do I have a reasonable chance to end up within commuting distance of a decent urbanish area that won't completely suck for my family?

You choose where you want to go. They will even fly you out to interview for 3 jobs. You can choose from a database of a few hundred available positions and you are given a facilitator to help if necessary. It's not like the military. Your choices are limited but you apply/interview and choose where you want to work. You also have some flexibility if the site doesn't work out.
