I was originally in a traditional MSTP program, but I'm now doing my PhD research at the NIH through an individual partnership. I do all my research at the NIH and I only go back to my home institution for thesis committee meetings. I entered this program because I wanted to do my research at the NIH, and that's probably the best reason to do it. Other perks include that you probably get paid a little more, and you get a new computer to use for your entire time there. You also get to travel for things related to your studies on government funds. The NIH is also one of the biggest if not the biggest research enterprise in the world so it can be quite resourceful for your research and what you can do is almost limitless. The DC metropolitan area is also a fun place to live and explore for a few years.
