Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows any first hand experience with the NIH Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training program (Baltimore, MD). Since I have little experience with research and know that research is important when applying to med schools, this program seems like it's geared for kids like me. 😱

Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

The NIH is a great program to do on your year off. I'm sure you will find it rewarding and enriching. I know for a fact that mentioning your research at NIH during your interviews will sound great to the adcoms. In addition, assuming you are graduating this spring and doing the NIH program '04-'05, I would write a short letter to the admissions to let them know you're doing this program. It looks great on your resume.

Most important, the NIH has a great reputation and is an extremely resourceul institution that can expose you to so many fields of research.

I only did the summer program there, but know a bunch of people who did their year off and loved it. I would have done the NIH post-bacc, but chose to work at Columbia instead since I had already done a summer program at NIH.

The NIH IRTA program is an excellent opportunity which allows you to use the information learned during your undergraduate career and apply it to research.

Up to this point I had never done research before, but I enjoy the opportunity that I have been given to work at the NIH.

I highly recommend it!!! I'm more of a people person that a lab person, but everyone in my lab is great. If you have any questions email or IM me.

Go to www.nih.gov. This is the main page - navigate to training programs for students and you'll find everything you need.

Hi, I am a current NIH Postbacc student. It is fantastic and I love every part of it. The best way to get a position is to submit your application online and go through every Institute to find which research interest you the most. Then you have to make the initiation to contact the primary investigators through emails and by phone, asking them if there is a postbacc position and letting them know that you are highly interested. Trust me I contacted about 10 supervisors and kept calling and emailing them back to back till my current PI offered me an interview; and the position was given to me. I applied online for the NIH postbacc mid August 2010 and I was given a postion to start on Nov. 2010. Basically you have to be aggressive to get what you want. You have to show that you want it badly. I hope this helps!
