nitrogen cycle clarification

the cliffs ap book and kaplan bb say different things about the nitrogen cycle

Cliffs says that plants can absorb nitrogen as nitrate AND NH4+, while Kaplan says they can only utilize nitrate. i hope my cliffs is not an out of date version that would be ****ty..

also just to be sure, N2 can be fixed to NO3 by lightning and UV right? thanx in advance.

I was wondering this as well. I think that Kaplan covers the bare basics of it (as it does for a lot of Bio, imo) but Cliff's is a little more specific. I always thought of it as plants can only utilize nitrate directly, and then they take that nitrate and convert it to ammonium, which then goes to protein synthesis...

I never heard about UV being able to fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrate though--just lightning (and the bacteria in roots of legumes). Is that bit from Cliff's as well?

Plants can utilize both (fertilizers have combination of nitrates and ammonium compounds)

Correct, lightning can fix N2 to nitrates as well.
