moving to Portsmouth in August. i'm wondering if we can access any beaches at Dam Neck.
If so, what do we need to do- just show ID at the gate, get a pass from Oceana, other?
Are the beaches nice? crowded? have facilities? surfing? pirates? unexploded WW2 ammunition? food/drinks? etc.

Any info would be appreciated. thanks.

I've been meaning to go, but haven't had time (welcome to internship). I think we just need ID/DOD sticker, etc unless im confusing it with another navy beach. I hear they're less crowded than VB proper, but I still usually just go there.

I spent a few months at Dam Neck back in 2003. The beach there was quite nice--we used to PT or play football on it. I don't recall any facilities (or families) being there. The surfing is pretty lackluster unless there is a major storm front headed through the area. They would occasionally shut down part of the beach to fire target drones out over the ocean and I am pretty sure that the northern part of the beach is off limits.

Enjoy Norfolk. If you dig below the seedy VB exterior, the place has a lot of nice restaurants and things to do. Definately not as bad a place as everyone makes it out to be.

Especially enjoy the Biergarten in Old Town Portsmouth. Best Bologna sandwich I've ever had. And supposedly the largest distributor of Aventinus in draft form of any single location in the US. Lots of other good beers, German and otherwise.

The whole Quad Cities area has more to offer than it is given credit for. If my wife didn't like sunny southern California so much, I could see us back in that area, even as civilian-type people.
