Hi folks - OSM1 strongly interested in PM&R and considering doing the an NMM/OMM +1 Residency/Fellowship except.....

..I'm pretty bad on finding data on how these programs are run. I know about the reqs (AOA approval, etc), but I've heard conflicting stories about what one ends up doing at these places (one person had a preceptor who compared it to being a jr faculty member - ie: a lot of paperwork and handling students). Some folks I've spoken with think its a complete waste of time, others point out that there are some passable programs that allow one to get better at their OMM skills.

Was hoping to hear from someone who has actually gone through one of the programs below:

And what their thoughts were on the institution they were at, or the whole experience altogether (did it help your PCP/Specialty Practice at all?)

I am sure a PM&R residency will prepare you perfectly well for your career even without that extra year of interest accru..I mean, osteopathic education.

Well thanks for the input.

You see, I have heard commentary running along a similar vein from others.. but then I keep hearing also things like

From what I'm hearing, the OMM '+1' fellowships are actually very competitive - both because there are so few spots and because doing the fellowships apparently is a major advantage in terms of getting into the best PM&R residencies.

That said, as far as I can tell most people end up doing FM with the OMM fellowship or pursuing combined FM/OMM residencies.

Quote taken from another thread on this very forum.

And I guess what i'm looking for at the end of the day is either a "straight from the horses mouth" tidbit from someone who has gone through the process above and either regretted the whole thing or thought it was a good career move

OR

a Metric that either proves/disproves the conflicting sentiments I've often seen.

I think if you want to do an AOA fellowship you'd have to have done an AOA residency, which means you would have to shoot for the VERY limited PM&R spots on the AOA side, limiting your opportunities to go though the ACGME match.

Or get your ACGME program approved by the AOA.

Not quite.. Babdoc hit the nail on the head.

Also this thread on the "Similar Threads" section below has someone inquiring the same question ---> http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/omm-1-after-acgme.925628/

...at least from the perspective of "Can it be done?"

You know, the more I look backward into SDNs history trying to find some answers to my own questions above, I do kind of get this feeling that once upon a time there seemed to be a lot more Residents and Fellows roaming these boards (precisely the folks I was hoping hear from about the matter) who may have well been able to give more of an Empirical/Experiential Answer to my questions.

If any of you are still out there - Would love to hear from you!

i did not do a +1 program but knew people who did. And my school (at one time) had a +1 program. They still do to my knowledge providing the president of the school hasn't ditched it like she did to so many of the medical school programs.

The +1 program at UNECOM was pretty good. You were in OMM clinic most of the week, taught at the school once a week, did lectures. People said they actually learned a lot.
